Loud brakes
Does anyone else's front brakes sound like their being ripped of the car when they start and stop? Mine make a terrable grunting noise that so loud it causes people in other cars to look at my car and of course the dealer says that there's nothing wrong or that's normal.
LOL, ok...i'll be serious here for once....since this is a safety issue. NO. I don't think anyone who drives a car would think that it's normal for their brakes to sound like that.

Of course there is no visable damage or wear to the rotors or pads. All the rotors and pads were replaced about 3000 mi. ago by Jaguar just before I bought the car. The last time that I took it in I was told that there was still about 80% left on the pads but that they were slightly glazed. It's like their not releasing all the way and sometimes they stick to the rotors. I'm taking it back in next week to have it looked at again.
Any similar experiences?

It's commom that one or both of your calipers are not releasing properly causing them to squeel like a raped ape.
This will no doubt casue premature wear...I would get it looked at or if you're handy with tools and know your way round brakes should be an easy fix. The caliper has two sliding shafts that permit the entire piston to slide back and forth. They need to be removed, cleaned, lubed and re-installed. This will hopfully stop your squeaking.
While your at it check for wear....it's common also that once the sliding shaft gets jammed up, the brakes tend to get a "wedge" wear pattern. No good...so you'll need to replace the pads....
Could save you $$$$ if you do it yourself...

I'm thinking about replacing the pads and rotors myself. I asked a mechanic (not the dealer) and he said it runs $550 USD per axle! WOW! Seems like a lot to me.

One of my front calipers froze and the car would'nt move so I had to have it towed to the dealer. They are replacing one caliper, both rotors and pads on both sides. everythings is covered by select edition except the labor for the side that wasn't damaged so I'm getting everything for 157.00.
