The service manager told me I should use only Jaguar oil filters because they have a special valve built into them that others do not. I've heard of others that have a valve that keeps the oil from bleeding out of the engine and filter when the engine is shut off. That way when you start the engine there is already oil in the system and you aren't running "dry" at start up. He didn't know what the valve did but I assume it is for the same purpose as above. I've always used Motorcraft filters and was wondering if anyone knew exactly what made the Jaguar filter different then the rest? I had a report on oil filter comparisons a few years ago but can't find it now. I just remember the Motorcraft's were rated at the top along with one other filter and the Fram's were at the bottom of the list.

No need for a Jaguar oil filter...believe me! I do suggest getting the mobile1 or the K and N if they make it for the X. The last time I did my oil change I used a K and N, which makes the removal of it VERY easy compared to any other oil filter. That's a 100% guarantee. Whatever you do though...DONT USE A FRAM! YOU FRAM IT, YOU BLOW IT!

OEM parts are the best for any car but I would only use WIX as an aftermarket replacement

Last I checked the only aftermarket oil filter manufacturers that use drain-back valves in their products are K&N, Mobil 1, and Amsoil. Stick with those or go with OEM Jaguar filters. Wix are very good filters but if they do not have a drainback valve I wouldn't use them.
On our cars the oil filter is mounted almost vertically, which means once the engine is off gravity will drain the oil from the top of the engine through the oil filter into the oilpan. The drainback valve is basically a one-way valve that allows oil to flow in the correct direction when pressurized, and keeps oil from flowing back once the engine is off. It ensures that you have a thicker oil film on all lower end bearings for a cold start.
NO FRAM!!!!! FRAM is junk.
