Just wondering if anyong has anyone has any pointers on replacing air filter on a 2003 x-type?

Links would be great, as I have snooped around and have not seen location, etc.

Anyway - still have not stoped smiling!

From my memory... If you are standing in front of the car looking at the motor, it is on the bottom right side. Like I said, this is from my memory, so it may be the left side - but I'm 90% sure it is the right side. It is a plastic box that is about the length and width of the new air filter.

The air box has a few screws holding it together (which I always thought was weird... Every other one i have ever seen has easy to use clips, lol). Take out the screws and pull the top of the box off. Replace the filter and put it back together.

 

Is this what your looking for?? Couple of screws to pull off the cover, then access to the air filter...

anderseno6 is correct. Use Mann C38 116. Repeat every 12000 miles or every 12 months.

Checked the air filter - not sure if it has ever been replaced! It was NASTY! I had to clean out under it with a shop vac there was so much sand and grit. Ordered the Mann you recommended today.

Got the new air flter today! $12.50 online....$5.00 shipping....installed it with no problems - thanks again for your help. Started my "olive" up and let her take a deep breath.....

flvoiceguy, open the hood (bonnet) of your car and look down into the engine bay. You will see a cover over the engine and just in front of that is a black box with "Jaguar" on it. Where it says "Jaguar", that is your air box. Remove the screws that you see, lift up on the top half of the box and there is your air filter. The filter just sits inside the box on a lip. So, unless you force things shut, you can only put it in correct.

 

Thank you. I figure it was that easy. I ordered this manual from Ebay (on disk) and it didn't load correctly, so I've been waiting to get that issue resolved before I go poking-around too much under the hood.

Okay, so I found the air filter. Actually, I figured it was where it was described. I just didn't know which casing to remove first. I had to remove the one that covers the oil filler cap first to get at the back screws.

So the filter looks pretty decent. Its a German model. I was wondering if anyone runs a K&N filter. I've heard people that swear by them.

Any thoughts on this?

I have run K&N filters on my bikes (BMW) and all my cars for many years. Very happy with the results, BUT they must be serviced..cleaned and oiled regularly. The cost is minimal if you factor the never need replacement. Can't speak for anyone else, but the first thing I change on all my cars is the air filter to a K&N

 

I also use K&N on all my cars. Well worth the initial cost.

 

I've been reading/hearing about the cleaning of a K&N. How often do you do this? They have their own cleaning kits from what I understand. My dad's been running them on his cars for quite some time. I just don't know how often to clean. Miles? Time?

It depends on the conditions where you drive. A real dusty area would require more frequent cleaning, cleaner conditions require less. You check the filter the same as any, pull it and visually check to see how dirty it is.

 

flvoiceguy, I have a K&N installed in my car and like Green Machine says, it depends on your area. I would tell you to treat it like a standard air filter. So, if you were changing your paper filter every 15K miles, clean the K&N filter every 15K miles. Worst case, clean it a little more often. Ironically, the K&N will clean the air better when it is dirty. So, monthly cleaning would not be recommended either.

If you have any more questions, just ask. The big thing with the K&N filter is not over oiling them. It will be obvious. If in doubt, oil it, drive the car about 5-10 miles and then pull the filter out. If you see a small line of oil coming off of the filter, then you over oiled it. Re-clean and apply less oil. If no line, then you are good.
