i do not have the homelink controls on my 04, but i can get the overhead setup with the buttons pretty cheap from a local salvage yard. would it be possible to just swap it out, or would other parts be becessary for the system to work?

You'll need other parts....if you have access to the junkjard Jag, get the wires and control module located in the truck, left side i think....
