Default 2004 XJ8 VDP - squeaking noise from steering wheel

I'm about to purchase this vehicle, has quite a few miles on it (78k). The service inspection people tell me it makes suqeking noise from thesteering wheel when turning.

Any speculation what the reason might be and a repair estimate?

Help is much appreciated. Thanks,
Venelin

Edit:noise was comming from the steering wheel, not the front wheel.

there is a jag bulletin fix for this.. its a liquid you pour in your power steering.. that eliminates the noise.. any dealer sells them for 15 ..put it in and after a day ortwo noise is gone

Any idea where this TSB is? I am having a "scratching" sound coming from my steering wheel and it is very annoying. It sounds like it's coming from inside the car, though, between the steering wheel and the rest of the column, almost as if two pieces of plastic are rubbing together.

Default squeaking noise from steering wheel

Hi if you can access Alldata the TSB is JTB00055 dated 8/24/2007. I think you can subscribe to Alldata for one vehicle/ one year for under $30. Good luck George

Well less than a month later, it seems the noise is back! What gives?!

Actually it seemed like the noise didn't go away completely after the first couple of days. Then I decided to take my scarf and run it between the steering wheel and the column to see if any plastic was rubbing. I think that pushed some grease into the friction areas and silenced the noise for about a month. I will try just adding a little bit more grease and see what happens!

I find it hard to believe that it could be a steering rack issue as the noise happens even as I just barely touch the steering wheel--I haven't tried to listen for it with the engine off, though.

Well, I just confirmed that the noise does in fact happen only when the engine is on, so it would appear that it is a power steering noise.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do, given that I've already put that fluid in before once? I'm thinking of putting it in a second time--the amount of friction modifier is so small that I doubt it would damage anything.

Ok, so I've decided to start by removing the old fluid and replacing it with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF. I am going to suck as much as I can out of the reservoir, then replace it, drive for a day, and repeat this process until I use up 2-3 quarts of the fluid.

...is the noise coming from the steering wheel column? I have 06 Super V8 and I get that noise especially in the morning. Then it goes away.

Is it really the power steering pump/mechanism, not the steering wheel column?

If I fix it per the TSB, the sound would go away. Hmmmm... back to the dealer I merrily go.

It's probably not in the steering column.

Default It is def from the pump

I too thought it was a rubbing steering wheel, thats exactly what it sounds like inside the car, plastic on plastic and noisier when cold;but it really is from the pump.
I added one bottle of the Jaguar additive and did the lengthy install procedure, it stopped it for a week or so, I added another bottle and really no change;I then turkey bastered enough out to add Lucas Oil stop sqeak n leak, that has stopped it, but there is still a few minutes on a cold day start that it is there.

Ok, so I started flushing the fluid out and replacing it with Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF using the drain and fill (dilution) method. So far I've swapped out a quart or so, and the scratching sound has stopped completely. We will see what happens tomorrow morning. Easiest $25 repair ever!

amcdonal86>> ...keep us posted on the flush. If it works, then it becomes one of my projects to do.

OK! I will!

Sadly, this morning, the noise is back just as bad as it was before. I wonder if this is weather related. It was quite cold this morning.

Last night the steering was definitely 100% quiet after all my flushes and "exercising" the steering, but this morning I did an additional flush of the reservoir (maybe 1/2 quart?) and the noise is back!

Does anybody know if this Lucas Oil Stop Squeak n Leak will cause damage to the power steering system?

I hope not....lol.

They say on the bottle it is suitable for all power steering pumps, I assume they know what they are about.

FWIW, my technician said my steering wheel "squeak" was caused by wear on the various electrical compression rings within the steering wheel hub. Cost to replace = $600...requires pulling the wheel, etc., etc., etc., about 3+ hrs. labor + parts. I have chosen to live with the noise, which comes and goes depending on outside temperatures.

He also said don't even think about squirting some WD40 in there...that would cause untold problems.

(My '04 XJ8 has 170K miles.)
