Default 04 XJ8 transmission leak

Hi,

I just got my new 04 XJ8. Went to a Jaguar dealer for an inspection and got a long list of things to fix. My main complain was some stiff shifting between 1 and 2 gear. The re-programmed the TCM and now it seems much smoother (crossing fingers). While servicing that, the tech noticed that the gasket on the transmission pan is leaking a little bit. The estimate for the gasket replacement is a whooping $1147. Breaks down like this:

JAC2C9645 - sleeve $19.43
JAC2C6714 - Gasket-sump $62.20
JAC2C8432 - transm oil 6x$99.31 total 595.86

Labor $367

Does this sound right, that is a whole lot of money for trani oil.

Thanks

thats about right for the fluid
probably need closer to 4 or 5 bottles though
depending on the mileage of the car and the condition of the fluid you might ask them to reuse the drained fluid
whatever you do make sure you get it FIXED
you think this is expensive?
you dont even want to know how much a transmission will cost you if you dont get it fixed

Of course I'll get it fixed. Just surprised by the fluid price. Does the ZF transmission use some super special fluid?
On my dodge and my acura similar service is in the range of under $200 incl the labor.

Funny thing, I got a quote from another jag dealer in the area for $600.88 for the trani gasket repair. That sounds more reasonable to me going there Friday.

The correct fluid is sold through Jaguar parts supply chain in a 20 litre jug for under $300 dealer cost. I don't think alot of dealers realize this, my local one was quite surprised when they received the jug I ordered from them. That would explain the much more rational second estimate, which is still a tad more than I get for the service.

Some people have imaginations and experience levelsthat are "sealed for life".

veffremov

titleAndStar(7,0,0,false,",")

your second estimate is most likely them reusing your old fluid
as long as it isnt in bad shape it"ll probably be ok
20.00 for the sleeve
60.00 for the gasket is probably about right
warrant labor pays about 2 to 2.5 hours
so 3 to 3.5 hours customer pay is about right
good luck
let us know final results of repair

The second guy mentioned 4 quarts of fluid and 2.5 hours of labor. Will let you know how it goes.

Happy to report the issue was fixed yesterday. The final price was only 378. Great dealer - Jaguar of Seattle.

In a perfect world, that would make ibjags and jag_genius entitled to some of the money they helped you save. In this world, they're at leastentitled to some thanks.

If I had been told the gasket was leaking a little bit and it was going to cost this kind of money, which is meant to invoke the gag reflex,I would have cleaned the pan completely and retorqued the fasteners and watched it a few days first. Often times, some spilled oil from the engine oil breatheror other things can fly back and get on the tranny pan and make it look like it is sweating. I am just not as trusting, from long experience.
