Default 2006 XJ8L road noise

We are the happy owners of a '06 LWB XJ8, bought used w/ 15k miles inJuly.
Beuatiful car, smooth, powerful. However, I notice more road noise than I consider
acceptable for a car of this pedigree / cost. Is it the hyper-hi-performance p-zeros?My
'06 Jetta GLI is quieter on coarse pavement than the Jag. Have othersshared my concerns?
ThesePirellis tend to wear quickly.....when the time comes, would I be wise to buy a different brand tire?
Tire Rackrates the Yokohama S-drive and the Kumho SPT as"quiet" tires.

Am I right? Whatdo others here say about this subject?

I have Pirelli's on my 04 and they are very noisy tires. I can't believe that Jaguar puts these tires on these fine cars. Mine are lasting a long time, but I don't know how much longer I can stand them.

Many people say the Pirelli P Zero's are noisy. My friend had them and two tires had bubbles develop on the sidewall.

I am a die hard Bridgestone fan.

Jagmaster, that is a beautiful car. It would look even better with the upper mesh grills from Mina Galleries!!

The Mina mesh grill is awesome. Not so easy to install, but makes cleaning the car faster!

bmw, I don't mind the 17' wheels, as the ride is a little more comfortable on the freeway. I have considered have them chromed though and maybe do it when I get new tires.

JagMaster, Great PhotoShop work! The mesh grill look awesome on that color car. I had no problem installing the grills. Take the grill frame out and it is very easy to do. Frame comes out easy too. BTW, the chrome mirror covers are from Mina too. Also have the Mina exhaust system.

Chrome wheel:

I like the exhaust on my VDP. Before I bought the car, I wanted to get the exhaust, but mufflers are pretty nice looking OEM. Is there resonators one can cut out? That should give it a little seat of the pants feeling. Lot cheaper than replacing the exhaust especially if there's little to gain.

The wheels are actually chrome plated. LA Wheels usually has them in stock. You order the chrome wheels and pay a deposit. When you get your chrome wheels and mount them, you send them your OEM wheels and they return your deposit. The cold air intake set off my CEL, so I had to remove it. The cold air intakes are only beneficial if the intake is out of the engine compartment, shield or not. If they are in the engine compartment they will only pull in heated air from the engine and defeat the purpose. A good hi-flow air filter in the airbox is the best way to go. The Mina exhaust is very nice. It is quiet at low levels, but it will growl at full throttle. Exhaust tips are larger and high quality too. Exhaust is all stainless as is OEM.

Yeah I have a K&N filter, my friend told me the same bout intakes. Exhaust update sounds good but gotta find someone to install it. Im kinda busy nowadays, you know i just relocated and rented a new office etc. I dont see many xj8s around in virginia, in west palm fl almost 5 of 10 cars were xj8 lol.

I took my Mina exhaust to the local muffler shop and they installed them for $100.

check and make sure none of your tires are feathering.. which can cause noise while driving

WOW! I've seen many highjacked threads before on many forums. Probably caused a few myself. But this one is a real cake-taker.

To the OP: I'm confident that when you get a decent set of tires on it your Jag WILL be quiet and you will be satisfied that you are driving a true, high quality, QUIET, luxury automobile.

I don't know if you're running all season or summer tires. I had a very quiet ride with 18 inch Michelin all seasons and currently having excellent results with 20 inch Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110 high performance summer tires although I only have a couple hundred miles on them.

Anyway, relax and don't worry. You made a great choice on your new car. Just get it some new shoes.

Oops! I just saw that this thread is TWO YEARS OLD. Sorry, I've got to pay closer attention to the dates before I put my fingers in gear. LOL

JagMaster,

Your car looks superb with the new grill. Two years later but better later than never.

I asked my tire company why I have so much tire roar. He said that :

There is no 1 answer and a number of factors apply. The tires are Summer performance and therefore can't be moved from side to side. As they age they take a "set" that can't reversed by normal tire rotation and therefore the noise gets progressively louder. The tires are large at 255/40X19. The rubber compound is relitively soft and sticky. etc. etc.

My noise varies radically dependant on the road surface. There are some surfaces where they are wisper quiet. Others make you believe "this can't be a Jag". In general they are a minor pain.
