Default S-Type transmission problem

Hello dear friens .

I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. I have a 2001 Jagaur S-Type 4.0 i sometimes have misfire and I have put seafome and other fuel injector agents in my fuel that have caused my check engine lite to cut off when it had a misfire because it seemed to have helped clean some deposites or something. Well anyway I have read different forums and I realize that I will eventually have to replace some coils on the two that have shown misfires.
Now to be honest I havent even changed my plugs yet so who knows. well the real issue that I'm concerned about is that I have 120,000 miles on my Jag and twice in one day my transmission messed up. I put it in gear after it warmed up idling for 45 min. (only because I was outside doing other work around the car) and when I put it in drive I immediately went to take off and she had'nt caught gear yet and just responded as if in neutral well I said to myself oh I just reacted to fast so I put it in reverse and then back to drive and it was ok. however 10 minutes later after leaving the gas station I started accelerating and it when to neutral on the 2nd or third gear I immediately when to neutral and put it back in drive and it was ok. the very next day after warming up for 15 min it did not want to go into drive again even after several tries so I remember someone one jagaur forum said try putting it in manual shift and I did and it worked just fine and even the automatic shifting started working and I have'nt had no problems sinse. does this sound like the issue that one of the forum mechanics mentioned that the transmission computer is hooked up with the engine system also and if their any type of misfires that the trans can act up like this and slip when the engine is not running right. sorry for such a ling messege

Welcome to the forum newbeginnings,

I've moved your transmission question from the General Tech Help section to the S-Type section to get more views from members with the same model.

When you get a minute, please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST section and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. In return you'll get a proper welcome and some useful advice about posting to the forum.

Your problem sound like the shifter cable assembly is stretched and needs to be replaced. Have you ever had the parking pawl detent replaced? The parking pawl detent has a large lip and will stretch cable is you are parking on slight hills and not using your parking brake. The test for stretch cable is this, start car and put into reverse. Then slowly move shifter to nuetral and if the shifter goes into nuetral and the R is still lite then your cable needs to be replaced.

Check the cable and also check the bolts holding the cable to the transmission first. I would also do a fluid level check. Make sure it's done correctly because it's not that simple.

Then before you do anything else to the transmission check your coils. You have been ignoring the misfires for over a year and they do not go away. Seafoam won’t fix them either. They only get worse. You most likely have oil in the plug wells too.

Do some searching on this forum for great instructions on how to change your cam cover and plug well gaskets, all 8 coils and all 8 spark plugs. These are wear items and with your mileage you are overdue for all of it. Do not replace only one or two coils! You will be back in there replacing more in a short time.

Many times the transmission acts up because the engine is not running right. So get the engine running correctly and report back what the transmission is doing.

Also, your plugs are likely well past needing changing. Bad coils/plugs will damage your cats and also cause engine trouble that upsets the trans. The trans may be OK but be suffering due to the engine so fix the engine before this all gets very very expensive (cats + trans as well as the already needed parts).

jagmaster, thanks for offering your help. i have a 2000 jaguar s type 4.0. i changed coils, spark plug seal. clean oil build up. my car starts and runs fine, while driving, if you come to a stop the car starts to misfire. if i immediately shut off car and restart it, misfire is gone until next stop of low speed travel. As for the gear box, takes a while to engage to drive, when it does engage, if i hit the gas to hard. it seems to jump out of gear.

romeo8426 start your own thread. This gets way too confusing with people jumping in with different stuff. Please put all your car and repair details in the first post.

We are playing a guessing game over the internet and if you want quality answers give us all the facts you have!!

My reply was for the OP. I agree Romeo could help himself by starting a new thread.
