X type Rear brake pad change
Hello all, sorry to ask about something that's covered in other posts, but I hope you'll forgive a newbie! I need to change the rear pads on my 2002 2.5SE. I've read the post
https://www.jaguarforums.com/m_18463/tm.htmbut having tried the job once and failed, can I ask a couple of points please?
1. WhenI pulled out the handbrake retaining clip, basically nothing happened, everything is "stuck". There is no way to get the end of the cable out of the caliper. Is the idea that I should be able to releasethe cable from the mounting bracket and push it towards the rear of the car enough so that I can disconnect the end of the cable?
2. The lower bolt is covered by a large plastic moulding as we know. Should I be able to force this off the end of the bolt head so that I can accesss the bolt, or should I be able to insert a narrow spanner into the gap between the caliper and plastic enough to remove the bolt? There is of course no mention of the plastic thing on the JTIS CD!
3. With the cable finally off and both bolts out, should I be able to remove, clean and grease the sliding pins.
4. Again forgive the ignorance but which side is rotated which way to retract the caliper? I know that the left side is anti-clockwise but which is left?!!Is left the passenger's please!?
Sorry for asking questions which you guys will be saying "not again", but I want to make sure I do it right!
Thanks!

1) unhook the cable first, I use a screwdriver or vise-gripsto pry the lever backand the cable just unclips from the lever, then it will come out of the round hole in the bracket.
2) use a deep 10mm socket to get that rubber thing off the lower bolt.
3) slider pins should be straightforward to clean and lubricate.
4) the two sides turn opposite directions. you need to apply some pressure inwards while you turn orthe pistonmay not retract as you turn.

A point re. the 'special' tool ... I discovered that anlarge allen key that had been hiding in the depths of my old toolbox fitted perfectly!
Oh, one thing...does anyone know the correct positioning of the piston..er.. as you wind it in you can set it in one of two positions (from memory the two cut-out slots are slightly different) but I couldn't see what difference it would make...
I was going to go by how they had been fitted before (from new) but realised both sides were fitted differently!
Any ideas guys??

Thanks for the replies guys! Your reply Humy had me a bit confused, till I realised that as I'm sat here in the UK I sit on the wrong side of the car from you guys in the states!
In the end I must admit that I got a garage to do the job. The trouble was getting that piston back in counter-clockwise, as the tool I have only works in the clockwise direction. I also found that it was very difficult to get the handbrake lever far back enough to release the cable end, though it was made easier by releasing the return spring.
I now have a problem with the central locking on the car, so I'm off to trawl the forum and perhaps start a new post!
Thanks again for the advice, even if I didn't use it in the end.

Here's an easy way to retract the caliper, but you'll need two people (I used my kids ages 7 and 11 so it's not that hard). First, remove the caliper from the caliper bracket and rotate the caliper backwards towards the gas tank. I didn't remove the e-brake cable clamp and I had no problems reaching the caliper piston once both screws were removed, and the caliper swung free.
Use a large C-clamp and place it directly on the piston and the back of the caliper, start applying pressure and hand this over to your helper. Makesure to place the movable part of the clamp on the piston, and the frame of theclamp on the back of the caliper. Use a large pair of slip jaw pliers to turn the piston the appropriate way (really only turns one way easily so this is a clue of which way to turn). Have your helper continue to tighten the C-clamp as you rotate the piston back into the caliper.
Thank your helper, have a beer, and give your kids a juice box and a glob of GoJo.

Cranking the caliper pistons in, is a whole lot easier if you open the bleed nipple while you're retracting the piston (left side, looking forward..rotateCOUNTER CLOCKWISE) (Rightside CLOCKWISE)
I remounted the caliper assemblyloosely after I got the old pads and rotor off and out of the way and then used this universal caliper spanner tool..and just pushed in while I turned..
