it is outside under the plastic windshield cowl, some say you can loosen the cowl and stick your arm underneath it to access the filter

Confirmed...

passenger side after you pop the "trim rivets" out. If you pull it up, you can reach the other hand underneath and just pull it out.

I don't want to alarm you, but on my car I had water get into the actual fan unit and it smells musty despite the fact that I just replaced the filter.

one thing you may want to try is to blow some Lisoil (can't think on spelling) through it with the filter off to kill anything in there with your fan running at least once a year to kill everything in there.

Comma aircon cleaner will do the job link
I've used it myself several times and it really freshens up the vehicle no end. Simply start the car, push the passenger seat all the way forward, and sit the can on the floor behind it, press the nozzle on the can ( locks in place ) and close the door...wait for 5 mins and job done

You may not have this product where you are but I'll bet you have sumthin similar

On a side note - you should use your A/C regularly, summer and winter.....If you don't use it for long periods this is when the fungi start to grow and multiply until you have this situation you find yourself in now

Good luck
