Default how can i identify 98-2001 vdp supercharged cars?

regrettably the insurance gods have totaled my 98 vdp. I would like to get a supercharged vdp to replace it with.I don't know if 1998-2001 models were available in the USA with superchargers. Searched site and found threads that seem to indicate that it was a 800 dollar option(what a steal). I would like to find a way to tell with out asking the seller.By serial number or car pics would be ideal.

It was called a Super V8 - They are sold as Super V8's. Badge on trunk say Super V8. I can not remember what years they brought them in. They did not make many -- and they were expensive

I believe it was at least 11k over the XJR. I do remember looking at one that was around 90k. They were nice -- Its unlucky anyone selling is not going to know what it is.

For Vanden Plas it would have 68 in position 6-7 in the VIN.

For Supercharged they would have an 4 in the 8th spot at least mine does.

You can decode the VIN here:
http://www.autocalculator.org/Free-V...&vin3=2PA26883

Here is some explanation, but it seems hard to follow.

Cool World-wide production numbers

That's the worldwide total. So, for the USA, divide that number roughly in half.

Here are the year-by-year build totals for the VDP Supercharged:

1998 - 36
1999 - 165
2000 - 208
2001 - 234
2002 - 145

(Source: Michael Cook, Jaguar Archive)

For the year 2003 and later, the Super V8 was introduced as a new model and the Vanden Plas Supercharged was discontinued.

I don't know if there are external differences, but all you really need is a look (or a picture) beneath the bonnet/hood.
The supercharger sits on top of the engine and has the word embossed on it thus:

I know the one I looked at said Super V8 - maybe it was a 2003? -- It was when I was getting my 02 R.

I also do not think that they brought them into the USA in the early years -- I seem to remember something about getting them certified for the milage on the Gas guzzler tax.

If I was looking for a replacement - it would be the car I would look for.

Super V8 that was used later at least through 2001 they were known as "vdp supercharged." This was called out on the model designation plaque on the boot. Strangley mine just says VDP. The other physical clues are special wheels and exhaust tips that are the same size as xjr. Their are two for sale in the Austin Craigslist at the moment.

The other posters have it covered: check the VIN to be sure, or just open the hood and look. The only external clues were the 17" solar wheels and larger XJR-style exhaust tips. There are only a few hundred of these around, so the odds of a particular VDP accidentally being a supercharged model are low.

I believe the "Vanden Plas Supercharged" badge was only used for model year 2001. Prior to that, there was no unique badging. 2002-03 cars were labeled "Super V8."

The original price difference was not trivial--a standard VDP stickered somewhere around $65K in 2000, and a VDP supercharged was about $80K.

Wink Here is a side view...

of my 1999 VDP S/C

Unfortunately it currently has a blown head gasket. I am saving up for a remanufactured engine.

Had the nikasil linings. The sulphur content of gas has been minimized, so it is actually a benefit if the engine has not scarred already.

But it costs almost as much for a mechanic to do the head gasket on the current engine ($6000) as it does to swap it a remanufactured engine($7000). I am sure the remanufactured engine will not have the nikasil in it.

I know this may seem a bit on the cheesy side to the "purist" but since your are going to replace the engine anyway...whats the harm? http://www.youtube.com/user/scottykilmer#p/u/2/3suQy44G_B0

The Jag mechanic did try a similar product, but it did not work.

Do you have any experience with this product?

No...not personally...I have through the years used different "quick-fix" products with great success. Its really a matter of following the directions to the T. If it were me, I would buy and use the product myself. Did you get a chance to watch the video? There was another one on there where a guy had a jeep with a serious leak. It shows the exhaust as the product is used and as it works. you see the steam come to an end. It certainly couldn't hurt, I don't know what kind of mechanic you deal with, but I always deal with these matters myself so that there is no room for error or erroneous information. It seems that more times than not, when you involve someone else in a situation that involves financial gain...alot of times the person on the short end of the stick is the one with the money leaving the wallet.

My 2001 VDP Supercherged actually has the VDP trunk badge that also incorporates the word
"Supercharged" as well . It also has the factory paint that changes colors from green to blue to black. Its a long wheel base with the large rear side windows and tray tables that fold out behind the seats. I will try to attach photos if I can figure out how to do it.

Mannybz -
All 98s had Nikasil engines. The switchover happened in late summer of 00. I suppose the good news is, if your engine hasn't died by now, it won't - at least from the Nikasil issue. But it could still be done in by the timing chain tensioners.
