Default Cold Start Injector

Has anyone else encountered this '84 XJ6 Vanden Plas scenario:

Cold Start injector has a faint 'ticking' sound with the engine off, and today I notice a puff of smoke at the connection.
(I have disconnected the injector to avoid FIRE!!)

I know from the previous owner and service records that the Cold Start Injector was replaced in the Fall of 2015.
Before I take it to my mechanic, any ideas??

check the wiring for obvious shorts and replace the thermo time switch.

What would worry me is whether it is mechanically stuck open so disconnecting the electrical connection may do absolutely nothing.

If you are mechanically inclined, you can build a home grown injector tester to see if you have leaks, identify stuck open/closed conditions and check the spray pattern. I have built two different versions from 2x4 sticks + spare parts (fuel pump, regulator, fuel rail). For me, it is an absolute MUST to have something like that.

The checklist already mentioned will help ....but a key point is that the CSI should have voltage only when the key is turned to 'start'. If there's voltage at any other time then something very amiss with the wiring.

It is grounded by the Thermotime switch, by the way.
