Jaguar TCS 2023 Formula E Car

With Jaguar set to become fully electric by 2025, Formula E provides a fantastic opportunity to test new tech.

The 2022 Formula E season was pretty good for Jaguar. While Coventry didn’t take home the constructor’s or driver’s championship, Jaguar TCS Racing pilot Mitch Evans finished runner up in the standings. That means the team is coming into 2023 with a full head of steam, and now we know what they’ll be putting on the grid. Meet the new Jaguar I-TYPE 6.

Billed as “the most advanced and efficient electric Jaguar race car ever,” the weapons-grade green machine boasts multiple improvements over last year’s car. For starters, it’s the first Formula E car to have powertrains at both the front and rear. It’s also 160 pounds lighter and 100kW more powerful than the outgoing model. Given enough runway, it’ll hit 200 mph.

Notably, new 350kW regen unit at the rear is twice as powerful as the one used in 2022. That means the means conventional rear brakes aren’t necessary, and for good measure, there’s also a 250kW regen setup up front. To make sure the new car stands out, Jaguar designers have also given it an asymmetrical livery that features carbon black, satin white, and gold accents.

As trick as the new racer might look, however, the most exciting bits are still under the skin. Electronics giant Wolfspeed is supplying its advanced Silicon Carbide technology to the series, and more importantly, Jaguar Land Rover has also tapped it to provide technology for the company’s upcoming electric models.

That’s good news for Jaguar fans, because while the “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” strategy might have fallen out of favor in recent years, Formula E offers tremendous opportunities for tech transfer between the track and the road.

The 2023 Formula E series kicks off in Mexico City on January 14th, and will span 17 races in 12 different cities. A strong showing in this series will likely be a boon to Jaguar’s reboot as a purely electric company, so keep your fingers crossed for the team!
