Porsche Quits Endurance Racing, Will Join Formula E for 2019
Porsche moving to Formula E to catch up with Jaguar, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Since it’s inception in 2014, Formula E has increasingly attracted manufacturers to join the fray. Looking beyond the racing/specialty teams involved, Audi was the first OEM to join Formula E in its inaugural season. Following them was Jaguar, who has been involved since 2016. BMW then announced that they would partner with the existing Andretti Autosport team to supply powertrains for the 2018 season onward. Mercedes-Benz is quitting its long term commitment to DTM Racing to join Formula E for 2019. Now Porsche is the latest manufacturer to join the all-electric madness for the 2019 season.
However, Porsche’s involvement with FIA Formula E comes with a huge asterisk. Mercedes-Benz decided to quit its long run inĀ Deutsche Tourenwagen MastersĀ to run Formula E. Porsche is leaving its long run in World Endurance Challenge with it’s Lemans Prototype program. Yes, Porsche is trading LMP1 cars for Formula E racers. This is obviously a big deal for Porsche, and an even bigger deal for Formula E. FIA Formula E has been attracted manufacturers from other series and is experiencing massive growth that few other series in recent years have ever seen.
