2018 Jaguar E-Pace Wins Over Driven Reviewer

By -

Jaguar E-Pace crossover has enough aims to be your new (and very desirable) grocery-getter.

Crossovers are sort of a thing right now, so it makes a lot of sense for Jaguar to try to cash in on that craze. You might want an F-Type in your driveway, but the E-Pace is the practical Jaguar that you’re more likely to buy. If Jaguar sells enough of these, it’ll help give us more of the performance stuff everyone loves. Tom Voelk of Driven gives us a closer look at Jaguar’s new crossover.

First, the name. The “E” in E-Pace has a long history with Jaguar (E-Type, XE). However, for much of the rest of the world that “E” moniker means something entirely different. Slap an “E” beside any name and it’s automatically assumed the car is electric. That’s not the case with Jaguar.

If you want an electric Jaguar than you have to go with the excellent I-Pace. If you decide to buy an E-Pace, get ready to spend a little time explaining to all your friends that it has an engine powered by gasoline. Slightly tricky naming conventions aside, this is a great-looking crossover.

The P250 SE is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 246 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque with a 9-speed automatic transmission. You also get standard all-wheel drive for handling that winter weather that’s just starting to hit.

There are drive modes that don’t just make the dash change colors. Voelk says these drive modes actually change the way the E-Pace handles. Don’t like the preset modes? You can also set the throttle response, transmission mapping, and steering individually.

The E-Pace posts a 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds, but Voelk says it feels quicker. Thank the torquey, turbocharged power delivery for that. It also has a top speed of 143 mph, which beats out the I-Pace, if that is your prerogative. Will this little crossover live up to your expectations of the Jaguar brand?
