Behold the Auditory Glory of the 2021 Jaguar F-Type

Jaguar’s look for the 2021 F-Type might be new, but the soundtrack thankfully hasn’t changed.

Longing for an F-Type is nothing new. Ever since Jaguar’s sporty coupe appeared on the scene in 2013, enthusiasts have been clamoring to own one. Now for 2021, we have its first major refresh. The look is distinctly F-Type but more modern. The front end is a bit more daring in its design. And the engines? They are still allowed to sing. If you’re still waiting to get one, these teasers are as good as the smell of an approaching meal at a restaurant. You know something good is on the way.

Rory Reid got a bit closer to the new V8 F-Type R, and his first question wasn’t about the features. With 575 horsepower, the new F-Type R actually receives the old F-Type SVR engine. Reid’s main focus was sound, saying “we know that F-Types are some of the best sounding cars on the market and I want to make sure that’s the one thing that wasn’t ruined.” Judging by his ear-to-ear smile, the sound of the V8 still passes the test.

If you’re not springing for the F-Type R, the F-Type R-Dynamic isn’t really a big step down. We previously reported its 3.0 liter V6 is supercharged and pumps out 380 horsepower and 339 lb/ft of torque. It also pumps out a ceremonial howl of speed. Jaguar’s video above features that V6 engine. The video from Jaguar showcases adjustable exhaust baffles that allow the 2021 F-Type to have a “refined engine note, or allow you to be heard long before you are seen.”

Back to Reid’s comments on the 2021 F-type’s subtle updates. Big changes have happened upfront with lights that are wide and narrow rather than drawn back. The fad of large grilles has also infected the F-type somewhat. “At front, there is a new grille. Predictably it is wider and deeper than before. That’s just how car design is going these days” notes Reid. But in our eyes, it helps make the Jag look more aggressive and hunkered down on the road. It also works well with the new rear taillights which are similar in shape but are no longer rounded. And then, there’s the open top version. Our hearts are aflutter.

Inside, it is still visually familiar as an F-type. Reid notes, “one big change is to the instruments. They’ve gotten rid of the old manual gauges and you now get a 12 inch TFT interactive driver display.” Good news for drivers who like their apps, too, as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Looks like the 2021 F-type keeps everything we love and makes improvements when necessary.  It is one of those rare times when the sequel is just as good as the original. Perhaps better.
