2022 Range Rover Comparison

As you’d expect from “the David Attenborough of classic cars,” this comparison video is a treat to watch.

Harry Metcalfe is gearhead’s car collector. Unlike loads of other well-heeled folks, who hoard limited-edition hardware just to rub them with a diaper and pad their portfolios, the founder of EVO Magazine actually makes a point of driving his cars. And, wow, what machines they are. Metcalfe’s stable is packed to the gills with magnificent hardware, including multiple examples of the Lamborghini Countach, a Ferrari Testarossa, and several Jaguars, including a 1978 XJ Coupe, a Project 7, and a Project 8. So clearly, the man has taste.

He’s also, as he describes in a recent episode of his Harry’s Garage show, a “serial Range Rover buyer.” Since 1990, he’s owned nine of the rigs, the last of which only arrived back in April. That’s quite a streak, though it’s worth noting that he disliked the P38 model enough that he defected to BMW until the L322 hit showrooms. So after Metcalfe got a look at the latest incarnation of Land Rover’s legendary luxury SUV, he didn’t want to just say, “oh look at it, that’s shiny, that’s lovely,” he wanted to compare it to his current ride.

As you’d expect from the man The Telegraph dubbed the “David Attenborough of classic cars,” the resulting video is a treat to watch. Fittingly, he starts the comparison at the front, and confirms that the styling updates have been evolutionary rather than revolutionary. That said, it’s interesting how he points out all the visual work that Land Rover’s engineers have done to deemphasize  the bevy of sensors necessary to run various safety and comfort systems.

Along the side is where things really start to change. The wheels have grown in size, from 21-inch to 23-inch units, and the mirrors are slimmer too. Most noticeably, the somewhat “fussy” looking hockey stick treatment which starts at the base of the front windows is gone, and it’s been replaced by what looks like a vestigial gill. That gives the doors look a more cohesive, unified look, and Metcalfe is also a fan of the new flush door handles — he thought the old ones felt cheap.

Obviously, there’s loads more info in the video, so if you’re interested in what one of the world’s coolest car collectors thinks about the latest Range Rover, give it a watch!
