Jaguar Formula E Racer, I-Pace Come to the Lego Speed Champions Lineup
First Jaguar Lego Speed Champions kit introduces the new 8-stud-wide design language.
The Lego brand has announced that the Jaguar Formula E race car and the new I-Pace sport utility vehicle are coming to the Speed Champions lineup on January 1, 2020. These two vehicles will come together in a kit that celebrates the British automaker’s push for advanced electrification in the racing world and the consumer world, but it is also a big deal for the folks from Lego. The Formula E race car and the I-Pace are the first two vehicles in the Speed Champions lineup to showcase Lego’s new 8-stud-wide construction, leading to more realistic forms and the ability to seat two Lego figures side-by-side.
The details on the Lego Speed Champions Jaguar Formula E and I-Pace are limited, but thanks to the team at Brothers-Brick.com, we have the basic information on this unique kit.
Jaguar Lego Speed Champions
The Jaguar Formula E and I-Pace team up to create Lego Speed Champions set number 75898, but that number will not appear in the company catalog until the beginning of 2020. We don’t know how many bricks will be in the set, but it includes the Formula E racer, the I-Pace, at least one figurine and a starting line apparatus with a starting light. In most cases, a kit with two cars comes with two figurines and there appears to be a figurine with a white helmet and another with a black helmet, but we don’t know for sure what all comes with the set.
As you can see in the pictures here, both the race car and the SUV do a great job of recreating the real-world Jaguar machines. In the case of the Formula E car, it looks a great deal like the real thing, while the I-Pace requires the Jaguar decals to be recognized by many people, but when compared to a picture of the I-Pace production vehicle, the resemblance is clear.
Meet the 8-Stud-Wide Platform
For Jaguar fans, the arrival of the Formula E race car and the I-Pace electric SUV in the Speed Champions lineup will be exciting because this is the introduction of the British brand in block form, but for Lego fans, this set is very important for a different reason. To date, all of the Speed Champions vehicles feature a 6-stud-wide construction, but the I-Pace and Formula E race car introduced the new 8-stud-wide format. With help from a newly designed base plate, the wider format allows two Lego figurines to sit side-by-side in the I-Pace, while also presenting a more realistic shape. The 6-stud design leads to only one seat behind the windshield and the cars may seem too narrow, but that changes with the 8-stud design.
In addition to the new 8-stud-wide chassis, the Jaguar I-Pace features a new, wider windshield design and the Formula E race car comes with a new angled corner piece.
Finally, the I-Pace rides on a solid chassis that will allow the vehicle to be played with hard without falling apart. For those Lego fans who play with the assembled kits, it doesn’t take much for the kits to crumble with a multi-piece chassis, but this new solid chassis could lead to more durable Speed Champions vehicles in the future.
We don’t know the MSRP for the Lego Speed Champions Jaguar set, but we know that most of the current two-vehicle Speed Champions sets cost $30. Since this set introduces a new design, it could cost a little more, but we don’t expect it to be dramatically more expensive when it officially goes on sale on January 1.
