New Range Rover Sport Ready to Drop May 10th

New Range Rover Sport

Land Rover has a crazy stunt planned. Let’s hope the latest Range Rover Sport doesn’t make a big splash.

Most of the time, debuting a new vehicle is a rather staid affair. Media is assembled, speeches are made, covers are removed and pictures are taken. Or at least, people try to take pictures. In my experience, trying to get any good snaps at a reveal is a fool’s errand — unless you want your shots photobombed by a gaggle of out-of-shape journalists. That said, a recent Twitter post has indicated that Land Rover is doing things a little differently in regard to the forthcoming Range Rover Sport. Something tells me there won’t be a pudgy scribe to be found when the wraps come off the Range Rover’s more athletic sibling on May 10th.

Exactly what the feat will entail is, predictably, still a mystery. But from the teaser clip embedded below, it looks like it’s going to be pretty hairy indeed. There’s a huge drop, flowing water, some gnarly-looking ledges, and a stunt driver wearing a helmet. So it’s clear that some kind of nasty ascent or decent is going to happen, and it’ll likely be a spectacular stunt. Of course, given that the nastiest terrain most Range Rover Sport models will see is a manicured gravel driveway, or perhaps, a Whole Foods parking lot, it’s also fantastic overkill. But you know what they say — there’s no kill like overkill. And I can’t wait to watch.

Since the reveal is still about two weeks out, it’s unclear exactly what’s going to be under the hood. Now, there will be a fully electric model sometime post 2024. But until the green machine drops, the smart money says the latest Sport will be powered by the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 currently seeing service in Range Rover. In its current spec, that mill cranks out a respectable 523 horsepower. The Sport will definitely be packing more poke though — so don’t be surprised if you see output figures crest the 600-pony mark.

Given how stunning the new Range Rover is, I can’t wait to see what the designers have done to give it some sharper edges. And obviously, I’m also beyond curious about exactly what’s going to happen with this watery stunt. Stay tuned for full coverage after all is revealed on May 10th!
