Tesla-Swapped Jaguar Mark V

This Tesla-swapped Jaguar Mark V is rapidly turning from dream to reality — and the process is fascinating.

Back in early March, I stumbled across SuperfastMatt, and got pretty excited about his Tesla-swapped Jaguar Mark V project. Given how irrationally stoked I was about discovering the electric XK120 from Lunaz Design, I loved the idea of getting an up close look at how such an ambitious project comes together. Plus, Matt’s engineering skills, along with his proven track record for wild drivetrain transplants, made me confident this project wouldn’t get permanently stalled.

Well, over the past two months, I got distracted by both my riding motorcycle and the — not fiscally responsible, but likely inevitable — prospect of adding another vehicle to my fleet. Something tells me Jaguar Forum members will understand exactly what I’m talking about in that regard. That said, I was pleased to see this shade tree savant has been making steady progress, regardless of the fact that some of the electrical speak goes a little over my head.

So now,  I’m even more stoked about how this project is coming together, and even if you’re as hopeless at turning wrenches as I am, you probably will be too.

Last month, Matt got the rolling chassis assembled, which is a major milestone in a build of this caliber. Just getting that far involved more welding and fabrication that many projects require to be running and driving masterpieces, so it was neat to see. Now, he’s working on fitting the new-school batteries in the Jaguar’s refreshed — but still decidedly old-school — frame. When this is done, our hero will have a homemade “skateboard” platform on which to mount the body. Hopefully, we’ll get some shots of him driving it around sans sheet metal, just for kicks.

Now, honestly weren’t a lot of compelling images to grab from this video, so pardon me if this post isn’t up to my normal sexy stands. But the lack of visual razzle dazzle is due entirely to the current state of the project, and the fact that batteries and frame are really just expensive rectangles. There’s truly loads of awesome info in every episode of this series, and Matt presents it in a way that’s knowledgeable, humorous, and instructive. Check out the clip below, and let me know what you think!
