Throwback Thursday: Jeremy Clarkson Waxes Poetic About Jaguar F-TYPE

By -

Unforgettable reviews like this Jaguar F-TYPE bit only remind us how much we miss the original Top Gear trio.

Though we admittedly rather enjoy the new Top Gear and The Grand Tour, nothing can ever compare to the magic of the original TG. The groundbreaking show that brought us the dynamic trio of Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. Combine the undeniable chemistry, quick wits, and belly-aching humor of those three with some amazing cars and equally amazing cinematography, and you’ve got epic gearhead TV.

Sadly, one ill-fated punch ended that harmonious relationship after 22 glorious seasons. So when we reflect and watch old clips like this one, we admittedly get a little misty eyed. Sure, you can read, or watch any number of Jaguar F-TYPE reviews anywhere else. But for our money, nobody does it better than Jezza. Especially when the undeniably patriotic Brit is behind the wheel of England’s then-latest and greatest sports car.

The F-TYPE was a revelation for Jag when it debuted. But Clarkson prefers to refer to the car as an “x-rated, hardcore monster for the terminally unhinged.” It’s a shining example of the highly masterfully woven wordplay Clarkson is so famous for. And it’s 100% accurate. More examples? “When you turn it up, it snorts like a hippo.” Who the heck would have ever made that comparison? Only Jeremy Clarkson, that’s who.

It should come as no surprise that Jezza loves the Jaguar F-TYPE so much, of course. For starters, it’s a Jaaaggg. But it’s also a roaring, primordial, rear-wheel drive beast. Which is precisely the sort of transportation that “The Orangutan” prefers.

The only problem? Well, Clarkson doesn’t much care for the hard suspension of the Jaguar F-TYPE. But there is a simple solution. “The ride gets better the faster you go,” he notes. So, in a nutshell, “don’t drive slowly.” And it’s priceless advice like that that make the O.G. Top Gear trio so beloved across the automotive spectrum.
