Underwater Land Rover Classic: So Many Questions

Underwater Range Rover

Against all odds, this crazy water-prepped Range Rover Classic managed to cross a lake while fully submerged.

Along with being cushy and luxurious, Land Rovers are known for being able to tackle trails and ford water. But while I’ve seen some seriously impressive demonstrations of off-road prowess, both online and in person, I was still blown away by this clip of a Range Rover Classic going full Captain Nemo in a lake. Originally, it surfaced on Instagram, and when I first watched it? I was absolutely convinced this proud piece of British iron was headed straight for Davy Jones’ Locker.

Fortunately however, the bold soul who prepped this amphibious beast did their homework, as the Rover’s snorkel apparently worked as intended, which ensured it would live to ‘wheel another day. That said, the breather tube is just one of the many, many, things which would have to be prepped to ensure a safe crossing here — and I still can’t believe they were able to waterproof every point of failure. Seriously, as much as I love Jaguars, MGs, and Land Rovers, the electrical bits have never exactly been England’s forte.

So I would absolutely love to get a look at the wiring harness of this beast. Because while I know that a Land Rover Classic doesn’t have all the electronic nannies that say, a modern Defender does, if my old XJ6 is any indication of its complexity, there’s probably eight miles of wire in this baby. How exactly the owner managed to get every connection waterproofed is a mystery for the moment, but I’m betting it was a combination of painstaking attention to detail and total blind luck. Maybe you have a better idea?

Also? If you were going to go to all that trouble to make a vintage Range Rover watertight, wouldn’t you’d — I don’t know… — close the door before you took it into a lake? Wouldn’t that just guarantee that everything in the dash is immediately turned to junk? And what about actually driving? Wouldn’t it be hard to drive when you can’t see or breathe? Wouldn’t it be cooler to look through the windshield and have a clear view of the underwater terrain? Hopefully, some more information on this wild creation surfaces soon. I just have too many questions. Watch the clip below and see if you don’t too…
