Anyone have any experience running against one of these? I messed around on the highway with one in Western Mass for a while but was not a good gauge or indicator of the true performance comparisons/differnces between the two running off the line or from a roll. Sweet looking cars, just curious what to expect next time I run into one with an overly aggressive driver looking for some action

My friend has the 2 door coupe.
We ran about 20 times from a dig up to 130ish.
every time we were even by 80. I would usually get a small jump but he would stick right at my rear door. Every time I felt like it was luck, seeing how well that car is made and geared.
My younger brother has the 4 door sedan 335i. both are 2008's with full sport package.
I lost to my younger brother in the 4 door? couldnt figure it out. I kept ending up at his bumper...
but then again, my DSC and traction controll dont work and tranny shifts like complete ****ola so, ,,,
I would say a good running STR is slightly faster than the "300" hp BMW. I beleive they have more than the quoted HP afer being in both cars up to 155mph. much faster than any other 300 hp car I have been in.
my 2 cents.

be carefull with those 335i's, espicially those sleeper sedan models. I was going to purchase a 335i sedan, but being in the land of BMW here in socal, wanted something different, so went with the jaaaaaag.
EZ 400hp with a tune from vishnu performance, and thats just chip tuning, more if adding intake, high flow cats, echaust etc. Thing is they can make the same amount of hp, maybe torque, as an S type R, but they weigh a hell of a lot less. be cautious and just make sure you dont race them from a stand still, your best bet in an STR would be from a roll. good luck!

Here is some info I scrounged up:
335i:
-300HP, 3.0 ltr. I6 twin turbo
-power to weight ratio=12
-curb weight = 3605lbs
Heres the strange part, BMW USA has the 0-60 for the auto at 5.6 and 5.4 for the manual. However, Car and Driver claims a 4.9 from the SEDAN they test drove. After rummaging around, there was a common theme "how the the hell is the sedan faster than the coupe?". It must have to do with their tuning and or gearing, but the sedan does in fact seem to be quicker than the coupe.
E46 (M3):
-3.2 ltr./naturally aspired/ 333 (US) HP
-3415 lbs.
-0-60 4.8 for SMG, 4.7 manual, 5.1 convertible
Amazing how they can get that kind of performance out of a natuarally aspired I6. But there is a trend here......WEIGHT. Read on...
STR:
-4075lbs
-4.2 supercharged with Eaton m112
-2003/390HP, 2004-2008/400HP
-0-60 5.3 seconds, have seen some 5.1 claims from reputable sites.
-DISADVANTAGE- obviously weight, and no limited slip. Bottom line.
The one thing I found extremely interesting is that multiple sites claim that from 2004-2008 had a "revised pulley for the Eaton that produced an extra 20 HP". Is this true? If it is true than why do the stats only show an increase from 390 to 400?
Obviously weight is a factor, and realistically this car was produced to rival and compete with the M5 and E55. When I get time later I will get some figures for those.
These stats were literally pulled off the internet in 15 minutes so please correct me if I'm wrong on anything.
Just some food for thought.

"
The supercharged S-Type R joined the lineup in 2002, and the hope was that it would compete with BMW's M5 and the Mercedes E55 AMG. The R was powered by the newly revised 4.2 Litre V8 with an Eaton M112 supercharger producing 400 hp (300 kW; 410 PS) and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.3 s (0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 s). It included 18 in (457 mm) alloy wheels, wire-mesh grille and monochromatic paint. The R also has a rear apron, side-skirts, and front apron with built-in fog-lamps, a rear spoiler, a brace located near the rear subframe, and R badging on the boot lid and both front wings. It was the most expensive S-Type, with a base price of £50,040 in the UK (US$58,995 in the United States).
Later models of the S-Type R featured a revised pulley system for the Eaton M112 supercharger allowing it to produce an extra 20 hp (15 kW; 20 PS)."

I'll try and find the source. Do you disagree that 2003 STR's had 390 and 2004+ had 400?

My XJR is definitely faster than both my friends' E46 M3's till about 110. There is no question about that. After 110, I have seen different results...some times I will keep pulling away where other times their cars will randomly jump me by about two cars. Must have something to do with heatsoak??

Off meth, his car and my XJR are dead even from 40 to about 120...after 120, the XJR makes a definitive leap forward and pulls away hard. On meth, the Evo will pull the XJR by two cars until about the same speed...then the XJR will slowly start coming back, finally passing the Evo at about 130-135. The gearing on those Evo's are so short! Here is a video of the Evo making a 1/4 mile pass:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpkVlnZ-TKk
As for the Evo IX's, my friend had a BPU setup on his (intake, turboback, downpipe, boost controller, tune) and his Evo pulled half a car on mine from 40-60...after that, the XJR came right back and started to pull away.
From a roll, the raw power of the R's supercharged motors will definitely help in equaling or beating many of these cars. You have to watch out for some of those Evo's though! I raced another Evo with 272 cams and that car absolutely destroyed mine! Also, there is no chance from a dig...the AWD launch is just too much.

unless you have had work done (exhuast, pulley, port, tune, etc.), then it its all driver error. I hope we are talking about an e39 m5, our s type r cant get around 500 stock horses from the e60 m5, unless you go twin screw or shed a couple hundred pounds.
and like said before... no way from a digg.. jags aren't drag cars (see limited slip thread in engine section, still hasnt been figured out)
but.... with engouh money invested (in any car) ANYTHING can be possible to achieve.

Not too familiar with the Audi and Benz lineups, anyone know which models are comparable and their stats?
