04 X-type - retrofitting stock stereo to play MP3's?

My 2002 X-Type has a CD changer in the trunk and a cassette deck in the dash. If you have the cassette deck you can just get an adapter from radio shack. The adapter looks like a cassette tape with a wire that plugs into an MP3 player headphone jack. Works fine.
If you have a CD player in the dash I would think you could replace it with a stock cassette tape player and the CD changer in the trunk would still work. My car has a CD changer and no CD player in the dash.
I use the CD changer for driving around town and break out the MP3 player for longer road trips. The MP3 player hides in the ash tray, so all you see is one small wire running from the ash tray to the tape deck.

It's not quite what you're asking about, but would you be satisfied to be able to plug a flash-based player (iPod, Zune, others) or a USB thumb-drive into your stock audio system? If so, you might want to look into adding the Jaguar Audio Connectivity Module. I've been discussing a related project in the thread below and in a page that I wrote up about my Bluetooth project. cheapest solution is FM transmitter.
I used this up until I replaced the factory stereo to Pioneer x710BT (Nav/MP3/BT) unit.

It worked quite well for $10 device.

The ACM is over-priced. For less money I can have a 7" touch screen, dvd, iphone ready, navigation unit installed. I tried an FM transmitter, was not impressed at all.
I was just wondering if any of the factory Jaguar stereos had aux inputs like most other cars on the market today. Thanks!
