I have an '05 xjr. When i drive, the subs don't sound loud at all...I can't even hear them, and it sounds like the bass comes out of the speakers in the top of the dash. I also don't hear much audio from the back seats.

Does the system just sound like that, or could it be that someone wired the stereo incorrectly? When I hit "mode" on the cd player and boost up the subs, I hear no difference.

The system in my 1998 xjr was excellent...and i'm really disappointed in this stereo.

Any thoughts?

May have blown channels on the amp, or simply the speakers have been damaged by previous owner/users. I'd take it to an audio shop and ask them to check it out for minimal costs...then see if it's just new speakers in your future or perhaps an amplifier install. My initial guess would be speakers are gone; do a search, and there's some new aftermarket sub threads floating around just for your car as an upgrade.

Their response was pretty much, "the normal owner of this car is 60 (I'm 29) and doesn't care about subwoofers"...I found the response pretty funny.

I actually think the stereo is likely fine, but I'm just an audio snob.

Did the gent who threw in the aftermarket 6.5"s add an amp?

 

He did not, but he's thinking of doing it. It was apparently an improvement, but I think a new amp will do wonders. Here's two recent links to similar sub projects. enjoy.
