Complete - Speakers Upgraded / Changed in '02 X-type w/ Premium and Navi
With the help of some guys found here and on other jaguar enthusiast sites, I was able to install 4 DB651's into my 2002 X-type. It had the Alpine premium sound system previously, but 2 of the speakers had gone. You can find the replacements I used at the link below
http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107DB65...b651&tp=95
These speakers included a spacer, though I had to drill 1 hole through part of each plastic spacer in order to get the original holes to line up properly. I had been unable to find a writeup by someone who had changed speakers with the alpine system, only writeups with the non-premium system. The differences in the installs aren't huge, though the fact that the tweeters are mounted to the doors means you can't fully remove the door from your working area, unless you feel like unhooking a lot of wire. I broke a few of the door pins, or rather the plastic mounting pieces for the door pins broke. Though after putting the doors back on they felt fine to me, apparently enough pins had been left intact.
The improvement in sound quality is noticeable. Removing the Alpine speakers and putting the Polks in, you notice a huge difference in weight, specifically the magnet. Bass response is noticeably improved. Note that this is all running off the factory amp (headunit, I believe). Speakers also appear to get louder, without any distortion, than the factory one's.
The most challenging aspect was connecting the factory speaker wire to the speaker for the rear doors, as very little slack exists. If you're able to, you should pull the wire back into the door (you'll see what I mean), but the heat wrap made this near impossible for me. Instead, I poked a small hole through the styrofoam-like material on the door (sound deadening material I think) and ran the wires up through there. I used appropriate connectors which also added a little much-needed lenghth. After struggling with the shortness of the wires I finally got them to connect, just be patient.
Also, after completing 3 doors it became apparent that there was a problem with the locks. You NEED to put the red piece (green piece for the back doors) back into its guide, which is located on the part of the door panel you will have removed. Otherwise, the locks will not work (locked myself in at first, and had to remove doors all over).
I have two working Alpine speakers, if anyone is interested in them, or needs help with their own install, PM or e-mail me

I found your posting very helpful. I have the same car and also have speaker problems. 3 out of the 4 large bass speakers are no longer working. All 4 tweeters are still working. I am going to change the factory speakers with the Polk db651 speakers you had suggested.
It's been a few months, I see. I am wondering if you're still happy with the speakers.
I am hoping that my husband will be up for the job. Can you tell me if there are special tools needed? Having done it yourself, do you think it is something the average person can tackle at home? My husband thought we'd have to take it to an audio specialist, but from your other post it doesn't seem that difficult.

if your dealing with crutchfield, these would sound awesome in your car. Now granted they arent for everyone, but over the past 15 or so years i have always dealt with Boston Acoustics, and honestly, i can count on 1 hand how many times someone didnt like the way they sounded once installed (properly of course)

and a very close friend of mine was the head of the Polk team that helped develp the MM series, and they did a damn good job on them. If you can afford the MM's they are defintely worth getting.
If you want my personal opinion, i have always had Image Dynamics products. While not known outside of the car audio circles, they are a company based on sound quality, not quantity. if you want, check them out here www.imagedynamicsusa.com

CTX6 from Image Dynamics :
The CTX speakers are the affordable solution for the autosound enthusiast seeking a high performance speaker system. With a rich well balanced sound and excellent tonal characteristics that highlight the incredible detail. CTX speakers are engineered to make efficient use of every watt allowing them to shine at any power level. A secondary benefit fo this high efficiency is that they are capable of very high output levels.
The CTX use materials most manufacturers reserve for use in their top of the line speakers. Silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets, polypropylene mica filled cones that are stiff, yet light, and well-damped, nitrile butadiene rubber surrounds. The result is sound quality that is far beyond expectations and far beyond their price points.
CTX component coaxial speakers feature a long excursion mid-woofer design that handles high-power amplifiers effortlessly with low distortion allowing higher output levels. The Silk Dome CTX tweeters deliver the dynamics and detail of a metal dome tweeter without the listening fatigue normally associated with metal domes.
usual retail is around 99.99 for the set

I'm about to upgrade my 03 X-Type. Will be running a Audio Control LC8i processor, two sets of Infinity Ref. 6020cs, Kicker 6.5 Midbass to a Soundstream RUB5.800. I've verified that the harness that ran to the back and plugged into sub bx amp houses all of the speaker leads from the head unit therefore I can mount and run the LC8i from the trunk. My only question/issue is the wire coloring, every diag/chart that i stumble by has conflicting color schem. Does anyone have a acurate one?
