Radio code trauma

Radio code trauma
New here, so please be gentle! Problem as follows; Trying to input radio code. I have the card with the necessary information [all the paperwork I got with the car!]
Code is 2513, serial number is 00612282. I presume you enter the code by pressing the numbered radio pre set buttons, which is what I've tried. The "2513" appears on the screen, then the radio bleeps, and goes back to "code" again. After 3 tries, the "wait" signal appears, and after a time, reverts to "code" again.
1]Am I being incredibly stupid [quite possible]
2]Should I be pressing something before I enter the code
3]Do I have the wrong radio code
4]If so, how do I get the old unit out?
Many thanks for any help forthcoming

You don't say what model/year of car you're dealing with and I only mention it as I would only be familiar with the XJ6 (X300). From what I remember, on these cars at least, the radio in USA models, isn't coded. Here in Europe (Ireland) they are and in my case, if I unhook the battery for example, I have to input the code. The screen displays "code" and I just punch in the 4 digits, using the numbered buttons on the front of the radio. It then gives a "beep" and all is good to go. As far as I know, if I was to input the wrong code 3 times, then the radio will lock me out and it would have to be sent to an expert to be unlocked. So far I haven't tsted this!
What you're doing would appear to be standard procedure, but maybe the radio itself is at fault and having a problem "accepting" the code.

After disemboweling the centre console, I removed the offending article, and fitted a JVC after market job, with an adaptor harness. In the process, I found that the Jaguar stereo connector was making pretty tenuous contact with the wiring from the unit itself, solved by expedient use of a couple of cable ties to pull the two connectors together . I wonder if the iffy connector was stopping the original device accepting the code?
