The Remote On wire is a signal wire that when set to high (power present) turns on the amp. Not to be confused with the main +12v power, its a signal wire. I'm told our head units put out a 5v Amp-on signal, but most after-market units use 12v.
I havent tore into mine yet, just looking around to see if anyone knows which wires those are for each amp.

Continued
Since I'm going to replace both the stereo, and the factory Nav, I was in need of the storage compartment that comes in non-Nav cars.
I found, and bought this on e-bay for $70.
Now I can assemble the new stack off-car and install it all in 1 shot.
Plus, I'll be able to bench check this stereo, to identify the FC74 wires, all in advance of putting 1 tool to my car assembly.

Premium Stereo connectors cannibalization
I received the center stack assembly I bought off e-bay.
I noticed the receptacles for FC71 FC72 and FC73 are contained within 1 housing.
I've disassembled the radio down to the circuit boards.
I'm going to desolder the above mentioned receptacles housing, and the FC74 receptacle for the construction of a custom adaptation harness for the new unit.
I bought another service manual off e-bay which has more detailed information on the stereo schematic than JTIS does.
Although its not labeled as such, clearly FC73-3 is the remote-on for the sub-woofer amp, and FC73-7 is the remote-on for the center fill amp.

The amp that is located in the trunk is not for those center speakers. I never found a amp when I removed the stock radio to install my Pioneer 7600 head-unit but I did upgrade them to pioneer 3 1/2 for more details and sound when I got the car. I noticed when I installed my head unit, my speakers didnt sound the same since the head units dont have much watts to push it stock unless you have a amp, so I upgraded to MB quarts 216's

While I'm waiting on my project box, and RCA jacks, I'm wondering about the steering wheel controls, and the existing voice control microphone.
I'm wondering if there is some way to match the existing steering wheel switch wire (resistor switches) to the new Kenwood without having to use an SWI-JACK.
If not, then are all SWI-JACK's the same? or are there car-specific models.
What are the resistor/function values in the Kenwood?
As for the existing microphone.
The mic goes to the Voice Activation Control Module (VACM).
There are 3 wires, and 1 Braid going from the VACM to the exsting Radio Head Unit (RHU).
I figure 2 of those wires are audio-in to the RHU (for Factory Phone) my guess is the WG pair, 1 is a trigger out from the RHU to the VACM working off the steering wheel switch to activate the mic, my guess, the SO.
Should I install the new cassette storage drawer like Jag2k2 did?, or use that entire upper shelf for the Kenwood? I could mount the USB panel jacks up there?

DNX9140 upgrade Update
I've received the DNX9140.
Spent most of the day fitting it in place of the original stereo in the off-car center stack.
My adapter box is mostly wired.
Took time to get together the voltage regulator components for the Amp-On wires. (7805 voltage regulator, and 2 caps) which will drop the voltage from 12vdc to 5vdc.
I'm going to first try driving both Amp-On wires with 1 7805, FC74-3 and FC74-7.
I got an SWI-JACK with the 9140, which will be wired in to FC74-11.
The Sub appears to be mono, 1 channel, since the speakers are paralleled after the amp. So, I'm assuming that FC74-1 and FC74-2 are the audio signal wires.
The Center Fill is different, it has seperate pairs from the amp to the speakers. Are they stereo? Or is that just for the factory units "All occupants" vs "Driver alone" settings?
First I'm going to try the single output method, FC74-5 and FC74-6.
I'll post pics tomorrow, or this weekend.

Jag to Kenwood Adaptation box
I finished up the box today.
Also, I soldered up the Kenwood Power / Speakers harness.
EDIT:
This will change slightly.
The green wire (Parking brake ground) spading into the ground power will be Tee'd with the SWI-JACK power wires which will also insert into those spade receptacles on + and -.

DNX9140 Fit
Installing the unit into the stack wasn't too bad.
No cage was used, its a tight fit.
I ground off the diples on the cast aluminium side, and just used a hammer to flatten out the diples on the stamped side.
I had to mill down to the correct bold spacing on both side mounts (2" center).
It looks pretty good considering the display is partially tilted out, and I havent fitted the bezel yet.

No, PATS does not react to no stereo installed
I made my first 2 attempts at installing the Kenwood today.
First attempt was aborted due to lack of space behind the center stack.
Absolutely not enough room for my adapter box.
Reverted to plan-B, adapter harnesses...
I still had trouble fitting it all behind the stack, which includes an SWI-JACK interface box.
I stopped trying for today (the stack is about 1" from being seated properly)
I'm going to pick it up again tomorrow, and try to move the SWI-JACK out from behind the stack, perhaps somewhere above the passenger foot space.

I would'nt wish this job on my worst enemy!
Fitting all this into that little space was quite a task, but finally got it.
There are a few things I need to do yet, like find a final placement for the GPS antenna somewhere under the dash, find a place to put the iPod cable (the storage drawer didn't work out...
I haven't trimmed up the bezel yet, but here it is ...
The blue ring surrounds my Voice Control PTT (Push To Talk) button next to the USB port.
