Default F type Import?

Hi All,

I am currently in the UK however returning to Australia (ACT) permanently early next year. I am thinking of importing my 2014 F Type R. Has anyone done the same recently or know anyone who has? After looking through how to do it the biggest question for me is how they work out and what would be the approximate customs value at the docks in Sydney. In the Uk depreciation has taken it toll and its worth somewhere near £40k but I see prices are higher in Aussie and the only example I can find is

https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/det...19083583/?Cr=7

similar Miles / Kilometres Trying to work out how much they are going to tax me so any help on working out a Landed price Is appreciated.

any other issues anyone can think of?

Many Thanks

That’s a no then, wonder if I should install an extra battery to keep charge in the system for the 4 weeks it will take to get there?

I think it depends on how long you have owned it in that country. Way back in the '60s, I had friends who were working in a number of countries (UK, USA, Vietnam) and they brought new cars as soon as they arrived in those countries, and imported them at the end of their terms with no import duty. I have heard that such things have changed, but I don't know how. You might be able to Google it.

Have decided I will import it, have owned it for a number of years from almost new, only for 13,000 miles on the clock, Import initial costs $10_14k

Shipping either own container, with other cars although takes longer or in with my household goods, need to check it will fit with al the wife’s things!!

One concern is the method of securing, not really happy with straps going though the wheel to floor fixings having CC brakes, one knock on the disc.....

Will have a look at a hard wired extra battery to give extra travel life, also will need to leave instruction sheet on how to deal with the EPB disconnect system which stops the transmission going into park.

Will need to check import car insurance hopefully with low KM per year shouldn’t be too much?

Those who have imported, how do you find insurance, as an import do you use a specific Jaguar insurance company or just anyone who does import cars?

I have found a list of companies who seem to offer import insurance, always best on personal recommendation though.

Nick, there is a member here Ozmag (Mike) who left Sydney and moved to UK (I think) for a couple of years and may be importing a jag....Send him a PM and ask him.....he may still be there, worth a try, he’s a top guy.

Just checked an old thread and he was ordering a new xfs and bringing it back to Sydney....that was a couple of years ago!

Questions about exporting/importing vehicles to and from Europe, US, Middle East, Australia and New Zealand arise from time to time across our Region forums. I'm always interested to read the procedures and issues involved. There's posts spread all over but it would be good to have a thread where the information could be brough together in one place. If you'd like to detail your experience of the trials and tribulations of shipping, it could make the beginning of such a thread.

Graham

Once she is back with me I will do a post then, hope it will be of interest.

I found while searching to do this very little self import information around, most tend to use import companies.

Nick, Graham . . . I have purposely hung off without comment on Nick's first post, because my experience dates back prior to that of Cambo, who was our local go-to man on this topic. Both of us had done what you propose, and done so without recourse to an import agent . . . but, in my case it was back in the day when all you needed was documented proof that you had owned it overseas for a minimum of 12 months.

In my case, UK dealer receipt confirmed date of purchase and IIRC, service records showed 2 UK services, I can't speak for Cambo, but if you search the forums here, I am sure you will find his posts showing documents etc. Mine are long gone, as has the Jaguar.

Later, governments here realised they could reap a quid (actually, a fistful of dollars) from this process, then introduced luxury car import tariffs, duties, taxes . . . thus making my experience totally irrelevant to current processes.

That said, I would be strongly interested in learning what the current requirements are and I agree with Graham in encouraging you, Nick, to share your progress

Best wishes, and please keep us posted,

I can agree about the government want to get what they can from you, every turn seems to be “give us money”.

Luxury car tax and agents will comment on that when I do my write up.

Well nearly there, I managed to pick the car up last week from Seven Hills, lucky before the lockdown, after paying another $528 for washing the thing, apparently there was a dangerous leaf in the grill, there wasn’t when I put it in the container…. But since it was raining when the inspector came back to check it and it was parked outside apparently his eyesight was so good he could do another detailed inspection without getting within 20 meters of the thing. I had heard that regardless of how well you clean it they will insist on getting it washed.

One thing I like here is that I could drive it from Sydney back to Canberra rather than pay someone $800 to ship it, just got myself a “no rego” permit and drive her back about $30 for it.

Tomorrow will use another permit and go to the local inspection station to get it certified as up to Aussie standards then pay more money, yet to be told how much and get my plates, should be all done then I hope.

Note to Jim [Daf11e]. . . mate, we should do a separate thread on this "no rego" permit as so many are not aware of its existence. Perhaps liaise with other Regional Co-ordinators as to interstate. My brother recently brought back an unreg car from Melbourne to Sydney (ex Historic register) for nominal cost permit like Nick, but even I was unaware that you can get multi-day permit at not much extra cost for extensive journey such as interstate.

Note to Nick . . . I fear you got clipped for the second permit Nick. AFAIK, it has always been policy that you can drive to have your unreg car inspected and 'slipped' and/or to the Service NSW office, provided route is direct to and from. That said, such a low cost permit, displayed under windscreen avoids unnecessary attention. ** Oops . . . just realised you are interstate LOL!!!

Cheers and best wishes, Nick,

The original NSW permit was from point A-B if I had organised the compliance check before hand I could have driven there directly I think but as it was then in the ACT think I would have needed another to get home. Lucky got the car out of Sydney before lockdown.

Got back a short time ago from having the car inspected for Compliance as an import, to be truthful It was less arduous than a British MOT, lights, check numbers, check brakes, move steering wheel as I look underneath it, PASS, well FAIL actually as it doesn’t have a compliance plate

will have to get another non rego certificate to go and get them to show me where to attach the plate, o well $74 rather than another $800 as quoted.

Ordered the compliance plate, then will pay stamp duty, ouch and rego.

All done, her registration was sorted this afternoon, been a long haul but really pleased I did it myself rather than get a 3rd party to do it for me.

Will do the write up in case anyone else considers doing the same.
