Restocking fee for unwanted part

Restocking fee for unwanted part
Okay, it's my fault for not thinking of this sooner...but after accepting I'd need to fork out the $1,350 for a new fan assembly for my 2001 XJR I realised I could buy a used assembly for $300. By this time the part had arrived at my mechanic... And Jaguar Australia want to charge me $300 to take back the part as a restocking fee. I wonder if that's normal :-(
Ouch. I feel stung.
...and hello to fellow NSW Jag owners... I'm quite new here.

A restocking fee is also normal practice with UK Jaguar Dealers although they will credit account holders the full amount if the part is not special order.
Given the logistics costs for a low volume sales / high unit cost part like a fan assembly, I'm not surprised at the 22% restocking fee.

Yep, had restocking fee before. But only because I didn't understand the valve re-shimming procedure of a Yamaha motorcycle and ordered a full set if shims(7 thicknesses for 4 cylinders) before starting the job. I could have just pulled it down used 20c pieces and worked out what I needed and done the swap for $ 2 a shim, rather than a full set for $500ish.
The workshop keep a kit of traded shims where you can swap what you need for 2 bucks each, I paid $17.28 each for the full set...But the parts guy gave me $8 each for a return to the workshop as Yamaha Australia do not take back shims.
Lesson learned, do research first.

Yeah, it hurts but the logistics of moving parts around the country is more than just the courier fees. I understand.
I've also questioned myself about why my mechanic didn't suggest considering used parts...I suppose they open themselves up if anything goes wrong with second hand items.
Lesson learnt - I'm sure it's not the only thing I'll need to replace on the 'ol girl.... 210,000 and still purring sweetly :-)
