I notice in pictures, a lot of guys tape over the seams around doors, hood, etc. What is the reason for this?

When using a d/a over sharp ridges or corners do you have any hints for not taking off too much finish? Or is it better to do these areas by hand?

Great question......

The reason 3M blue tape is used is basically to cover their ***....or like insurance. When operating a rotary polisher, this machine spins at a high rpm. In the factory when vehicles are painted, many times the edges do not recieve the same amout of paint as the flat areas. Therefore when performing paint correction, you tend to pass over the edges numerous times, which can cause the paint in the area to be reduced very quickly if you are not careful. If you are familiar with this machine and how to operate it with confidence, eventually you will get comfortable enough to polish with out taping all these edges.

Another reason for taping is to protect the black mouldings and handles from getting any polish or wax residue on them or burning them. If you have ever experienced removing residue from mouldings or handles it it a royal pain in the butt. You can also polish closer to the trim or handles when you have taped these items. When your completed you just remove the tape and treat your trim with the dressing of choice.

When using a D/A

When polishing with a D/A, you will be completely safe going over edges and ridges. So long as you are using a polishing or finishing pad and your movement with the machine flows you will be fine. This machine is for minor paint correction, and is alot safer to use. Taping moulding also helps with the D/A to keep moulding clean of wax or polish residue.
