Factory matched touch-up paint doesn't
Trying to fix a stone chip. So far, I've sunk about $80 into two different brands of factory color-matched touch-up paints. The problem is, when applied, the color looks lighter, even after it has dried for 24 hours. I've have a 2001 XK8 in MDZ -- platinum metallic. Has the original paint faded and that's why the touch-up doesn't match? Or something else?
The chip is on the door, just below the trim strip. It's small and superficial -- not deep.
Any thoughts?

I bought Jaguar touch up paint and it looked very different from the colour of my car, more grey than blue. The Jag dealer tried other samples of the same colour they had, but none matched close enough. They claimed they had never had that problem before. I got my money back. I am now resigned to at some point going to a professional to have the paint properly matched and various little chips and scratches sorted.

Factory OEM touch up paint, especially metallic colors hardly ever match!
I have read alot of reviews of the following product.........professional results and a guaranteed exact OEM match to your car's finish.

Jaguar owners testimonial...
I have made my '94 MB SL500, '99 MB SLK230, and my newest addition, 2003 Jag XK8 all go from road rashed, rock chipped front ends to three beautifully detailed automobiles. What a discovery Dr. ColorChip was for me. I am your best advertisement in the area.

Platinum here also, and the three (3) repair places refused to try a 'touch up' of the silver, they all said it never looks perfect, and to do it correct, then the panel needs repainted and blended with adjoining areas. I'll look at the Dr's page, but it would be nice to know what the happy jag testimonial author's color of his XK8.
If you do it, let me know how it works out, I'd be keen to trying it on my fascia 'gouge' and hood scrape from an idiot who passed me on the shoulder and threw up a section of 2x4 into my car.

I'm a very satisfied Dr. Colorchip customer. I recently bought a kit to do some touchups on my wife's BMW and the small chips literally disappeared. I've just ordered another kit for my Topaz XK8 and I'm looking forward to the same great results. A note about what Dr. Colorchip is and is NOT good for: First, the quality of the paint match is excellent - better than the OEM touch-up sticks. For small road rash specks as shown on their site the product works miracles. The specks disappear before your eyes. if you're trying to fix a larger ding or scratch the results will not be as perfect - better than a touch-up stick, but not as good as what you'll see on the smaller nicks. They discuss this on their site.
I've had fairly good luck repairing 2-3mm chips by applying the well mixed paint with a toothpick. Dip it in the paint and then touch the toothpick to the side of the bottle so that the end is just damp with paint and apply to the ding. DON'T try to fill the ding with paint - just get some color on there and let it dry for a few hours. Repeat this process till you build up enough thickness to match the surrounding area. The trick is to not put enough paint to cause a bulge or drying shrinkage. Allow plenty of time between coats or you'll mess up what you've already done. Patience is a virtue!

I got tired of tying to find OEM paint touch up for my 03 Stype Topaz metallic so I went to an auto paint supplier specialist in Salem. They mixed a small pint for me of the original paint code type SEC. It matches great. I used it on the under side of the front bumper where it had some serious gouges. Look great. The paint cost me $26 but it was money well spend and I have enough for a zillion rock chips LOL. The toothpick or paper match stick idea works terrific. Yes, patience and very small amounts of paint are the key!

For larger areas I've called Colors On Parade. They came to the house and patched up and painted the rear bumper of my silver Jeep and the front bumper of my wife's BMW for $250 each. The colors are perfect and the whole job took less than 2 hours per car and was done in my driveway. Both plastic bumpers had scrapes and gouges and they now look like new. Body shop wanted $900 to do the Jeep and $2200 for the BMW so I saved a ton of money. Colors On Parade is a national franchise so look them up online. They can mix any color right in the truck.
