Welcome to the forums Simon,
This could be too late as I've only just seen it. Even though you have a diesel, better to post technical questions in the main X-Type forum for more Views and greater chance of Replies.

With a constantly illuminated CEL (MIL), the wisest approach is not to drive it until you know the cause. A code reader is the only systematic way to troubleshoot. With powertrain faults, this doesn't need to be anything exotic (as in £££'s) although you will have to reference the Jaguar DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) lookup for the true description of any codes. Generic lookups are often misleading and inaccurate.
