I’ve scoured the forum, so hopefully not duplicating. I bought my approved used XF in January, low miles (23000) and after 31000 total, mostly long distance miles, the coolant needs topping up.
it was ‘MAX’ when I got it, now it’s the same distance below ‘MIN’ as the distance between max and min (so, twice the max/min difference down from max). I’ve marked it in the picture with a blue arrow Coolant level after 8000 miles from MAX
is that a normal reduction for this car? No witness marks under the car, no obvious leaks.
Coolant loss is NOT normal for any Jaguar. For both diesel and petrol variants, that is an excessive drop in coolant level over 8K miles. Temperatures have been higher than normal recently in England but the cooling system should easily be able to cope with that.
The vehicle has previously had low use averaging less than 4K per year prior to your ownership and you then going to 1K miles a month is more 'normal' driving with the engine running at optimum temperature rather than short trips which barely get it hot.
As you can't see any obvious leaks, I'd top it up and monitor it weekly to see if there is a repetition of the loss. If not, it is likely to have been due to air trapped in the system which has now cleared. If it continues then the first step in determining the cause is with a cooling system pressure test kit.
