1963 S1 Engine removal
The preparation of our S1 coupe for bead blasting continues fairly uneventfully; the wiring loom doesn't really resemble what left Coventry in 1963 but I'm sure it is something that can be sorted out with a multimeter, some concentration, a camera and the internet.
We might have got far enough to remove the engine this upcoming weekend. It's coming out the bottom but we are struggling to know how to lift it off it's mounts. As far as I can make out, lifting eyes were only fitted to over long studs from 1964 onwards. I've also seen enough opinions saying you ignore the lengthened stud bit at your peril for us not to jury rig something on the existing studs. Advice as to the best way forward would be much appreciated.

Hi Obald,
There is an engine lifting plate available to rent from JCNA, (you must be a club member). They are original factory tools. Here is the link, you can see what the factory tool looks like.

But being that your from NZ, this won't help you. There use to be a aftermarket lifting plate that I borrowed from a friend that I used on my 3.8l, Moroso 6267 lift plate. You removed 4 nuts from the heat studs and installed the plate. It worked OK for me when I pulled the engine out the top.

I apologise for the delay in closing the loop here. The engine is out without much drama and my query re lifting the unit was not really relevant in the end. I am sure we are not the first to have to wrestle with the torsion bar/reaction plate combination and in fact our biggest issues came putting it back on so the car can stand on its own four feet as a rolling shell. Anyway all done now and its off to the body shop tomorrow
