1966 xke series one 4.2 engine
Hello gentlemen,
Here is my problem my car is 98% resorted and I want to take it for a few test drives but the clutch grabs way out , leaving me no free pedal play. I had the engine re built about 15 years ago, the engine was fogged with oil twice a year and turned over frequently. I do believe the clutch was working before I stopped having work done on it, but now I have this problem. I do know that if the problem is internal that the engine has to come out, a very expensive work order, but I do think this is more of a minor issue. I know that the slave cylinder is the correct size being the 90 mm length and that a return spring is not used. This slave cylinder appears not to be in need to be replaced. In my shop manual it states to get more pedal free play to screw in the adjust rod , which is in all of the way but still no free play. What would you suggest? Help.

You could have a problem with the clutch master cylinder, not letting the fluid return to the reservoir. Make sure the pedal is returning all the way, and also try unscrewing the slave cylinder bleeder screw to see if that lets the slave retract further. If it does, your problem is in the hydraulic system, not in the clutch itself.

If I read your post correctly the problem is that your clutch pedal actuates the clutch as soon as you put pressure on it. If this is the case adjust the rod in the other direction to give you free play. Then when you push the pedal down it will move some distance before actuating the slave cylinder and therefore disengaging the clutch.
