I use the site PaintRef.com - Automotive Truck Fleet Paint Color Code Cross Reference to find codes. I've also used xkedata.com . In my experience most paint manufacturers don't have a cross reference matching the old codes with modern paint formulas. It is worth a try, though. Best method I've found is to have the paint shop custom match a part from the car that's survived in original color.
Cheers,
Richard

Thank you. Do you know if there's a way to decipher a Car # or Body # to determine the original body colour?

Thank you. I would like to find a way to determine the original paint colour of a '68 E-Type after being painted a different colour.

First thing I would try is to see if the car & VIN are included on the xkedata.com site. If you are lucky the original color will be listed there. Another thing to try is to remove the cover over the spare tire and see if that area has been painted. If not the color may be visible there. Also worth trying to remove an interior panel to check for original color. If none of that works then go to jaguarheritage.com . They sell heritage certificates listing original details like paint color, interior color, etc based on the VIN.
Cheers,
Richard

Thank you very much Richard. The car has had a complete disassemble nut and bolt restoration. I will check the sites you provided.
