Default 1971 E-type series 2. VIN starts 2R?

Hi! I'm looking at buying a 1971 Series 2 E-type, and the VIN starts 2R rather than 1R. I've read that a handful of late model 1971 Series 2 had this designation, but does anyone have any more info on this? Also, it looks like it has a series 3 bonnet (grille and flared front wheel arches). Is that original, or was it changed/'upgraded' at a later date? Thanks!!

Hello Mark,
There were in fact more than a handful late in the series that had a "2" prefix, but there is little written information regarding same.

The Series 3 bonnet with flared wheel arches and grille is definitely not original and would have been carried out at a later date. However, in my opinion, could not be described as an "upgrade". I've seen a few as you have described and they look rather hideous to me. The track is the same as the S2 is normally and therefore, the front wheels look somewhat pram like in the wheel wells.

Regards,

Brent

Thanks Brent! Completely agree with your 'upgrade' point. I was just guessing that's what the owner was thinking at the time (bonnet 'change' made pre-1979). Looks like I need to source a series 2 bonnet before respraying it then! Anyone have one?! Or know how easy/difficult it would be to replace?!

Also, if anyone has any more info on the 2R VIN's that'd be great. Thanks!

Hi Mark,

I own a 71 2R XKE Coupe which was original when built by the UK factory in May 70.
If you look at the pictures of my car here it should help you:
