Default 73 S3 Fuel Pump/Filter Question

I noticed on my S3 2+2 that there is not a fuel filter between the gas tank and fuel pump. The stock canister filter is located after the fuel pump. This looks to be the correct setup from what I can tell from the workshop manual and pictures. I had a bad pump on my car and after it dried out on the bench, it dumped out all of these lovely metal rust flakes. I am assuming they are from the fuel tank. The previous owner had the tank pulled, cleaned, re coated and reinstalled. I dont think he changed out the pump.

Since the pumps are pricey and a fuel filter is cheap. Wouldn't it be a good idea to put a fuel filter between the tank and pump inlet? Seems like cheap insurance if anything ever gets sucked into the filter again. Thoughts?

There is a filter at the tank pick-up point.

Whether it is removed from the top or bottom of the tank on a V12 E-type, I know not. On the XJ6 it is removed from the bottom.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the SNG Barrett link but didn't see the filter in picture. It could be wrong on my car, but i have a pickup fuel hose that goes straight from the tank to the fuel pump. No filter in that section. The main fuel filter canister is located near the pump but is in line right after the fuel pump. Do you know the specific filter part you are referencing in the SNG link? Thanks, Jim

Hello Jim,
The only filter that's in the fuel tank is in the Sump Assembly accessible from under the fuel tank. The part number of the filter contained therein is C29445.

If you're going to replace this filter, I'd suggest doing the whole job and remove the tank to thoroughly clean it. The Sump Pad make removing the Sump difficult from below with the tank in place, so removing the tank to thoroughly clean it will also give you unimpaired access to the Sump.

Regards,

Brent

There should be a glass bowl type filter just upstream from the pump in the front right corner of the spare wheel well near the pump. If you don't have one and don't want to spring for a reproduction unit just add an inline filter and problem solved.

As far as I have seen there can be up to 4 places where the petrol is filtered - depending on model, carbs used etc.
1. Inside the tank at fuel pickup. Re-usable.
2. Entry to fuel pump in the back of the car. Re-usable.
3. Glass bowl with disposable paper filter. Mine sits on the far RHS bulkhead.
4. At the carb inlet valve. Re-usable.
I would suggest you want to have at least 1 filter pre-pump (to protect the pump) and 1 filter before the carbs (I prefer the paper filter as you can easily see if its dirty).
Hope it helps,
