E-type Front Stub Axle
#2
Well, if it is similar to the stub axles I had to replace on a 1980 XJ6, then no ! What you need is a "talking" hammer. A heavy hammer will be needed of the sledge type. Ypu position the hub carrier horizantally on several blocks of wood with the wood right up to the stub axle, and of sufficient height that the stub axle can sit below and not touch the ground. Loosen off the nut and then apply suitable force using the hammer. Don't worry about saving threads as you're putting new parts back on. Mine came out quite easily. As you probably know, it sits on a taper, and these can be a real PITA to break the fit.
Of course a workshop will use a press, but for us DIYers, (as I once was), needs must as the devil drives !

my 20 ton press wouldn’t do it. Even with a big rosebud tip on my gas torch. Wound up popping it lose using a 50 ton press. When it released it sounded like a gun went off. Luckily I’d put a big block of pine under it that stuck into rather than have it fly all over.
