Engine Noise
Hi I am a new Etype owne,r or will be in a couple of days went for a test-drive in beautiful primrose V12 cab and noticed a noise when throttle blipped the noise at the end a cross between a wine and something catching at seed, I am not a techie but my Son in law, who is , was worried about timing chain but after he drove it said it was more likely to be exhaust, water pump, alternator. I fully expect noises on a 50 year plus lady but just don't want to dive in without knowing the depth

Welcome to the world of E-type ownership!
Regarding your strange noise: we can’t help you much based on what you’ve told us so far, so you’ll need to do some self- diagnostics.
Is the noise coming from the engine compartment or the exhaust? Does it vary with engine speed? With car speed? Do you hear it when the car is stationary?
If you can hear it when the car is stationary that will help you isolate it...use a stethoscope or even a piece of rubber hose to listen to various parts of the engine (being careful not to get caught in any rotating mechanisms).
You can also try to record a video and post it so we can listen to it.
Good luck!

Thanks Alan
Hi Alan
Yes I thought I was a bit light on info, have got the car now and we have isolated the noise to around the coil I have attached a video you can hear the sound which is more like a tuning fork, it some times last longer when the engine is being driven
Perhaps it is normal never having or driven Etype I would not know other than that the car runs a dream for a near 50 year old
I have attached video

If your coil is located on the front of the engine (later cars moved to back) you might want to check the emissions air pump that resides on the lower right front side of the engine. I've had one of those go bad and it made lots of unpleasant noises as it did. Try loosing the drive belt and so it slips freely and see if the strange noise goes away.

Hi Alan sorry for delay here is the link
The noise is like a loose washer rattling under a bolt It happens at 1100 revs at the beginning of the video I go through the revs and you can just here it then I hold it at 1100 revs and it is constant
Cheers

Yep...I can hear the noise now. As you mentioned, it sounds like something is rattling, but it only happens at a very specific rpm. Loose or worn timing chains would be noisy throughout the rpm range so it’s something else.
Get yourself an inexpensive engine stethoscope and listen to various parts of the engine while someone (or something) holds the revs at 1100 rpm. Even a piece of rubber hose would suffice. You need to isolate the specific area that the noise is coming from. It may turn out to be something simple, like a heat shield resonating or vibrating at a specific rpm.
Anyone else other there have any ideas?
Keep us posted.

Chirp Chirp sound.
[QUOTE=Rodney Binley;2379550]Hi I am a new Etype owne,r or will be in a couple of days went for a test-drive in beautiful primrose V12 cab and noticed a noise when throttle blipped the noise.
Hi I’m getting a chirp chirp sound at different rpm, car is stationary. Could be a blip blip sound. Question did your exhaust leak affect your idle smoothness?

Above advice for identifying the noise of course are all good, but to be honest, I didn't hear any sound that would make me overly worried. Check things like oil pressure, temp etc when hot (REALLY hot, not just 15 mins round the block), amount of oil you use over (say) 400 miles, is it charging ok (normal alternator voltage check at about 1500 rpm), is it losing coolant; and if they are ok I wouldn't get too concerned. If you have a specialist nearby then by all means get them to listen, but don't go ripping things apart prematurely. Overall these engines are pretty solid affairs that don't fall apart readily!
