Fuel smell from fuel sender unit gasket

I removed the sender unit from the gas tank of my 1969 E type today to replace the cork gasket in order to cure a fuel smell. When I removed the sender unit I noticed that the sealing flange was not flat and had been pulled down in the location of the 6 screws.
What is the best type of sealant to use between the cork gasket and the flange to fill this slight gap?
Thanks in advance,
Andy
