On my newly purchased 69 E type the heater box door (fresh air door) is either open or closed there's no in between although the handbook says that it's possible to adjust the air flow. I don't see how this is possible with the door spring mechanism.


Am I missing something here?

No. It is possible to adjust it to either open or closed :-)
