Default Interior Restoration

I own a 1966 E-Type OTS. I am having a shop that is not familiar with E-Types to replace my floorpans due to damage from a buckled section of road. The damage was to the mounting point of the rear suspension trailing arms (floorpans). I am using this shop because I trust them after using their services for 13 years on other vintage cars. My car's interior had to be completely gutted to prevent the interior from catching fire during the subsequent processes of removing the old floorpans: drilling, grinding, cutting and welding. The shop is now approaching the point where all the interior pieces need to be ready for installation. I bought an interior kit from Muncie Imports (OSJI) but, it does not include the material that is glued to the upper/inside car surface of the new floorpans. The old material that was removed earlier looks like thick tar paper 1/8" (5mm) thick. I am going to assume that this is incorrect material and was used as an expedient by a previous owner when he restored the car in the late 1990s. Muncie Imports' material is much thinner so, I am going with it. For those of you who are expert in the Jaguar factory installation of the interior, once the floorpans are welded-in, does the thin, black material go on top of the floorpans, with the carpet/vinyl materials going directly on top of it?

Hi 66Jaguar,
On my 68 E-Type, the original floor panels were covered with a type of tar paper from factory. This was installed for noise abatement and to stop the drumming sound that you can get from a vibrating panel. I believe this is correct for a 66 as well. Today some people are still installing the tar paper, while many (Like me) are using dynamat sound abatement material or something similar.
Hopefully someone with a 66 will come up with more precise information.
Good luck.
Bill.

66Jaguar:

I had my interior completely replaced by OSJI while my ‘64 OTS was being restored at Muncie Imports. They installed Dynamat pads throughout the entire interior, right under the stock interior kit and it works very well. Good heat insulation, no drumming and it’s not bulky or obvious.

Good luck,
Alan

Yes, the sound deadening material was a thick, black material (about 1/16" thick, maybe?) and glued on. I used Koolmat when I had my interior re-done.
