Hi Marley,
Are you sure the subframes have not been removed and reinstalled before? Was black material on the threads, or on the flat bracket surface?
When I removed the subframe on my 68 FHC there was no evidence of any sealant, and I am sure the frames had not been removed before by a previous owner.
Good luck with the search and the task ahead.
Bill.

thanks Bill,I'm pretty sure it has never been removed. the bolts on the front end were all painted and the car had original paint thru out. I spoke to Chuck at Monocoque Metalworks and he felt you should protect the bolt holes from possible water getting between the plates on the frame and the firewall but did not know what the factory did.

I am not sure if anti-seize compounds are water proof and/or non-permeable. So if there is supposed to be some type of compound to seal the threads, I would do a search on Loc-Tite thread compounds, or maybe just go to a Fastenall store near you and see what they have as a thread sealant. In my case we used anti-seize on the threads.
