Default Refurbish or Purchase Front Brake Calipers?

My dad has a 1964 E-type Series One 3.8.

His question is this:

"Is it advisable to refurbish the original front brake calipers or should I purchase the larger calipers? I am told that the larger calipers, when braking is applied, there is a moment of hesitation before the calipers grab the rotors, which to some drivers is very annoying."

I tried refurbishing the front brake calipers on my 68 E type. Had them resleeved and pinned. Never quite worked well, (leaked) so replaced them with oem. type calipers from XK's Unlimited. All worked well with the replacements. For a stock not used for racing E type oem. cylinder replacements should be fine.

Larger calipers, that is, calipers with larger diameter pistons, only in the front, will change the brake bias toward the front, and increase the amount of travel of the brake pedal before the brakes take effect. It will also give slightly more braking with the same amount of pedal pressure. Your choice.
I would not be afraid to rebuild the calipers you have. You probably need new pistons and a seal kit, clean all the rust out with a wire wheel on a Dremel tool and you should be successful. The rust rarely makes it past the piston seal, the bores are usually OK.

Thumbs up

Here is my dad's response. "The reply from Doug, also corroborates my thinking. I will refurbish the old calipers."

Thank you Doug!

If the bores are not pitted go for it. Let us know how you make out. Good luck.

I have found resleeving is more than replacements, and now you can get stainless steel ones for not much more.

Resleeving not as reliable either in my opinion.
Can you post a link to where you found the stainless steel cylinders? Might be interested when replacing my rear cylinders.

Here you go:
SNG Barratt - The Ultimate Jaguar Parts Specialist
A bit spendy at $208 each, but they should last for most of this century, plus you get 10% off by quoting JaguarForums.

We have a few options for the piston cylinder assemblies. OEM Dunlops & a couple of stainless variants from $121.00. Best to give us a call to discuss the options.

We also offer the 4 pot coopercraft caliper conversion if of interest.
