SII Etype: Petrol Pipe into Fuel Filter Connection
#1

I'm replacing a section of the petrol pipe that goes the length of the car from the fuel tank into the fuel filter of my SII Etype
It's the flared connection into the fuel filter body that giving me grief. Ive flared some pipe, but it when I tighten up the hollow bolt fully it clearly doesn't press home the flared connection enough and so the pipe is slightly loose.
The filter body looks fine and so I suspect that either, I've created an incorrect flare or I'm using the wrong sized pipe.
Does anyone have
Cheers, JC

Does anyone have
- A link to an actual picture of the correct flare - I searched www in vein
- A specification of the pipe that I should be using
- An alternative explanation

Two thing's JC#1 ,
Firstly ,
Single flare or double flare ,
A single flared pipe end will have "NO" olive in the fuel filter
A double flared ( or recessed flared ) pipe "WILL" have an olive in the fuel filter .
If their mismatched the pipe can't lock in hard enough to seal .
Secondly ,
If the depth of thread in the fuel filter is is longer than the hollow nut , the nut will bottom out , that is , the nut will go tight before the pipe has a chance to lock up .
Now , you did say HOLLOW BOLT , ( Banjo Bolt ) I am assuming that you meant to say HOLLOW NUT as there is no flaring involved with a Banjo bolt .
Good luck with that ,
Sid

Thanks Sid.
Yes, senior moment - yes, I've got a either a hollow bolt or a nut with the thread on the outside!!
I've put on a double flare. The real problem is that I took off the end last October and put it safely down for safekeeping!! I can't remember if there was a flare or olive on the end.
The more I look the more I think that there was an olive there - the 'hollow bolt' has no nose (or shoulder) at the end and so I can see how a flare joint would not work. The 'hollow bolt' may not be original - it could have been 'added' before I bought the car (23 yrs ago) when replacement parts were not easily available and clearly some of the fuel line was replaced. Looking at the 'parts' books, it looks like a flared end 'should' be there.
So if someone has a link to a photo of the correct part that would be great, that way I can weigh up which way to go!!
