Tyres - S1 3.8
Hi,
I know this topic has been done many times, but I’ve got a specific question, which may ruffle some of you.
I have a S1 3.8. It has Hankook 205/70 r15 tyres on 6.5 inch wire wheels, as I got it. The tyres need replacing (too old) but the wheels are near perfect. I don’t really want to change the wheels. Also, the original classic tyres are very expensive here in Australia. I’d like to add I was never disappointed with the Hankooks. The car always seemed to drive well and it behaved with predictability, including great behaviour sliding, on racetracks. However, I understand I do not have the experience of early E Types on the original wheels and tyres with which to compare.
I seem to have the option of 205/70, either expensive or limited choice, or 225/65, better choice but risk of heavy steering and body rubbing.
So, thoughts please on what tyres to use.

Hi catalpa34,
I understand your concern regarding tires. They play a big part in the driving pleasure. I would not go back to the original tire size as originally mounted on the car. They were narrow and didn't handle well compared to what is available now. If you liked the Hancooks you had on the car recently, why not replace with the same. There are some more classic tires from Coker tires here in the US but they can get a little pricey, such as the Coker copy of the Michelin red stripe, and Michelin XWXs which is what I am considering for my 68.
Good luck and post some pics of your car.
Bill.
