Default Vent hose on air cleaner

I’m trying to find a replacement vent hose for my 1974 OTS.
I need the corrugated vent house from the charcoal canister to the air cleaner. What do people use to replace the hose? Any ideas.

I assume you're talking about part #C38662 (item #31 in the below image).
Of course that part isn't available from any of the usual sources (here at Moss Motors for example)
It's frustrating because you know that somewhere out there must be the identical hose that's used for some other purpose.
You just need to find it.
I can tell you that it has the following characteristics:
  • 7/8" inside diameter
  • non-magnetic (aluminum? stainless?)
  • lined on the inside
It might be possible to find a replacement with a lot of searching.
Let me know if any additional details about the part on my car would be helpful.

I found it once, a while back. Called convoluted foil paper tubing. but I don't recall where. However a search today came up with this on ebay. Might work, but its shown as 1" diameter.....
I recall there is a short straight aluminum tube to adapt it to the rubber inlet to the canister. Right, I just noticed its shown on the illustration above. If rhvh2000 works at Moss, get on it and inventory this stuff. All of these cars need it replaced.

Yup, that whole string is the site address. I'm not sure why its so long....

Hi Niles,

Nope - I don't work at Moss. I just provided that link as an example of one of the parts suppliers where the part is unavailable. It's also unavailable at SNG Barratt, Welsh, Martin Robey, DMG, Limora, SC Parts, Terry's. I imagine egold56 looked at all of those and more.

The short straight tube that connects the rubber inlet (#30 in the diagram) to the hose (#31) is not aluminum - a magnet will stick to it (at least on my car). Probably steel. That is the part that has an O.D. of 7/8".

The eBay link shows a heater duct pipe that is black on the outside, and not corrugated. The OEM part is metal/silver colored on the outside and corrugated. See photo below. Also, the inside is lined with something that feels like felt. Maybe something more like this could work: Stainless Steel Corrugated Hose (indiamart.com) (but it looks far from straightforward to procure anything through that website).

All the best,

Rick

Right, not exact replacement. But I think the OEM is aluminum foil on the outside, and the interior "felt" is paper that is disintegrating with age. This is probably corrugated (it would have to be to bend as shown), with paper on the outside, foil interior. If the 1" dimension is the outside diameter, it will probably easily clamp to the connection tube. It it is too large, a few wraps of aluminum adhesive tape around the connector may work.

I have used this on all of my Jaguars for various installations.

Ooh, interesting David. It's hard to tell from the product link where on the car it could be used because you can't really see the size or specifications. What is the inside diameter of that Moss Motors "breather-tube-flexible-chrome"?
The original part number is C38662, but this part number is C2485. I wonder if they are interchangeable.

I found this but no discussion of internal dia.

According the XK 140 SPC, the only change of the Flexible Breather pipe relates to the introduction of a standard Lucas (Cable) Clip C.1040/21 or Lucas 900401, replacing Jaguar Clip C.4728. This Lucas clip 900401 is mentioned in the 1954 Lucas Master Catalogue and has an inner diameter of 1⅛” (32 mm) and a 5/16” (8 mm) fixation hole.
Photo Lucas Catalogue Fixation of Clip (Photo Harv McCullough)
The routing and length of the flexible breather pipe is different from the one for the XK120.
You may have to ask Moss to measure before you order.

I found a small length of the XK120 tubing left over from oil catch can installation on my XKE. It is 7/8" OD and 3/4" ID

I have a 1971 XKE series 3 and a hose that looks similar to the hose that you're showing in your picture and it is not connected to anything it is just open. In the picture below I've pulled it out to show what my hose looks like.. it can't be connected to the air cleaner because my air cleaner has other hoses attached to it. Any idea what this hose is used for and why yours is attached to the air cleaner and I have other things attached to my cleaner. I'm wondering what I should do with it I've just zip tied it to the frame

The rubber hose by your battery is supposed to be connected to the carbon canister below, as per the parts diagram at the beginning of this thread. I'm not sure what the hard line from the air cleaner goes to but guessing maybe the gulp valve? Not original for sure.

This type of hose is very common in aviation, particularly in light aircraft.
I suggest you have a look at "Aircraft Spruce" which is probably the largest supplier in the USA.
