Default Switzerland: Daimler 1994-1998 daily commuter?

Hi guys,

Would a 1994-1998 Daimler six (either the 4.0 or 6.0 variations) be suitable as a daily commuter between Basel and Zurich?

When I say 'suitable', I mean won't break down much!

Some excellent looking examples on the market here, with full service history and recently passed MFK (Swiss MOT version).

Thanks all.

I've had 80s-90s vintage Jags as my daily drivers since 1997.

I would rate them as very reliable (or very dependable) because in that time frame there has been only once instance where the car failed to deliver me to and from my destination. And, as it happens, the problem was due to a mistake on my part.

However, none of them have been trouble-free. All of them have required quite a few repairs.....some of which would be easily classified as typical for any car of similar age, mileage, and use. Some of them Jaguar-specific. And of lot of the needed work was playing catch-up, as many of these cars are not properly cared for as they age.

Buying a meticulously serviced example is a great starting point. You'll probably end p with a happy experience. But any 20-25 year old car requires attention and problems can crop up.

Cheers
DD

Doug raises some excellent points especially with regards to age. Basel to Zurich is an hour each way. Expanding on Doug's input, my choice between the two would be the 4.0 based on availability of parts in the event of repairs, and reliability. I would keep on top of maintaining the car and inspecting it for any potential upcoming failures, which I would think you might be the type. And worst case scenario, have a back up plan in the event it does break down. I don't use my XJ6 daily, but it never fails to start.

Jaguar World magazine has some very useful write ups of all models, and I am positive that at some time over the years, a buying guide to the X300 model / road test might be useful in making that final decision.

Hi mattfireval,

Just wondering if you made a decision on your consideration of a Jaguar XJ6. Thanks.
